The Government provides housing for fishermen in several locations, including 204 housing units in Pangandaran Regency.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo delivered the statement after inspecting fisherman’s housing in Pangandaran, West Java, Tuesday (24/4).

President Jokowi instructs Regents and the Governors to provide land for the housing project. The President also expressed his hope that the fisherman’s housing should be located in a good neighborhood, and should be close to the workplace, in order to provide a better life for the fishermen.

Regarding the offshore aquaculture in Sabang, Karimun Jawa, and Pangandaran, the President said that the design of offshore aquaculture can be learnt from other countries such as Taiwan and Norway.

“We aim for transfer of technology and transfer of knowledge, and developing modern fish farming instead of traditional fishing,” the President said.

President Jokowi further explained that an offshore aquaculture with 8 units / 8 holes can produce 800 tons of fish while onshore aquaculture can only produce approximately 5.5 tons.

The President stressed that fishermen should be able to catch up with the recent development of the modern fishing industry and not depend on regular fishing.

President Jokowi explained that the offshore aquaculture is located 8 miles from the coastline and has large capacity. The President added that the growth of fish in offshore aquaculture is faster compared to that of onshore. The offshore aquaculture, according to the President, also provides transfer of technology and transfer of knowledge due to the application of computer in monitoring the growth of fish.

The President also said that fishermen cooperatives, in cooperation with State-Owned Enterprises or with private sector, can provide working capital for fishermen. Thus, the fishermen can do regular fishing while having their shares in offshore aquaculture.

Also present during the event were Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan, and Pangandaran Regent Jeje Wiradinata.
