President Jokowi accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung responds to reporters’ questions after the Inauguration of 17 Indonesian Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday (20/2).

In response to a string of accidents that happened at infrastructure project construction sites, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono to tighten the supervision of infrastructure projects, particularly those that are under construction process.

“We hope such supervision can monitor negligence and mistakes made during the construction of supporting components of the projects,” President Jokowi told the reporters on Tuesday (20/2).

For the record, 14 accidents in infrastructure development projects have happened in the past two years, particularly those under construction process. Recently, pier head formwork on the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) toll road collapsed on Tuesday at 3 in Kebon Nanas, East Jakarta, injuring seven workers.

In the wake of those accidents, Minister Basuki Hadimuljono announced that the Government would temporarily halt the construction of all elevated toll road projects.

“We have discussed with the Minister this morning. His first instruction is to halt all elevated toll road projects,” the Ministry’s Roads Development Director General Arie Setiadi Moerwanto said in Jakarta on Tuesday (20/2).

President Jokowi also asserted that since infrastructure development is not only constructed in one region but in many regions across Indonesia, including the development of overpass, Light Rail Transit (LRT), and elevated toll road, tight and routine supervision must be carried out all the times

“The tasks are indeed detail-oriented tasks. It is impossible do the supervision once in a while,” the President said.

Relating the measure to temporarily halt the projects, President Jokowi said the decision is made for a total evaluation considering many infrastructure development projects that the Government is currently carrying out. Among those projects, the President added, several of them are planned to be completed in 2023, some in 2020, and there are also projects that are planned to be completed before the 2018 Asian Games in August.

However, the President reminded Minister Basuki Hadimuljono that all projects, both that should be done in a normal or fast speed, need tight and detail supervisions as well as management control.  (FID/RAH/ES) (RAS/MUR/EP/Naster)
