The second day of the President\u0092s visit to Manila bears two agenda, bilateral and multilateral.\u00a0President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono conducted a State Visit\u00a0to the Philippines\u0092 Presidential Palace,\u00a0the\u00a0Malacanang,\u00a0and later attended a special session of the World Economic Forum East Asia.<\/p>\n
The State Visit started off with laying wreath at the Rizal Park Monument to pay respect to the\u00a0hero\u00a0that sparked the Philippine Revolution in the 19th Century. Following that, the President heads to the\u00a0Malacanang\u00a0to have a bilateral meeting with Philippine President,\u00a0Benigno\u00a0S.\u00a0Aquino III. Among the topics discussed during the meeting\u00a0is\u00a0the state of bilateral relations between\u00a0the two countries as well as regional and global issues of common interest.<\/p>\n

\u00a0*Indonesia-Philippines Set Example in Upholding UNCLOS-82 and Model for Maritime Border Dispute<\/p>\n
Both President\u00a0Yudhoyono\u00a0and President Aquino deliver a joint press statement after the meeting. \u00a0President\u00a0Yudhoyono\u00a0began with congratulating\u00a0the Philippines for its achievements\u00a0in two areas.<\/p>\n
Firstly, on the unprecedented economic achievement by the Philippines that will go into the history books of\u00a0the country as it moves toward\u00a0fulfilling its economic potentials.<\/p>\n
Secondly,\u00a0the President commends\u00a0the recent peace agreement\u00a0in the Southern Part of the Philippines or the Mindanao\u00a0that\u00a0shows how age-old\u00a0conflicts\u00a0can be resolved through peaceful means.<\/p>\n
These two significant achievements, coupled with Indonesia\u0092s current economic progress will\u00a0indeed create more\u00a0opportunities to enhance cooperation between Indonesia and the Philippines\u00a0that\u00a0will benefit the people of the two countries.<\/p>\n
On this occasion, the two leaders also witnessed the signing ofthree agreements, i.e.\u00a0the Exclusive\u00a0Economic\u00a0Zone\u00a0BoundaryDelimitation Agreement, and\u00a0Memorandums of Understanding on education and counter-terrorism cooperation.\u00a0On the EEZBoundary\u00a0Delimitation Agreement, the President states that:<\/p>\n
\u0093the\u00a0completion of the negotiation of the EEZ Boundary Delimitation Agreement,\u00a0which has lasted for 20 years, will be a new landmark (of our bilateral relations) andInsyaAllah\u00a0will bring concrete benefit for Indonesia and the Philippines. With the signing of this agreement, we can foster more cooperation, for instance in maritime and fisheries sector, combating transnational crimes, eco-tourism cooperation and any other forms of cooperation that will bring mutual benefit to Indonesia and the Philippines.\u0094<\/p>\n
The President SBY further emphasized that:<\/p>\n
\u0093this\u00a0(EEZ Boundary Delimitation Agreement) is also a good model and example that boundary disputes, including maritime boundary, can be resolved through peaceful means without the use of military\u00a0means\u00a0that\u00a0may disrupt peace and stability in our region or elsewhere in the world.\u0094<\/p>\n
Other\u00a0topic that was discussed during the bilateral meeting was the state of economic cooperation\u00a0between\u00a0Indonesia and the Philippines. Both leaders noted the strong trade and investment between Indonesia and the Philippines,\u00a0nevertheless\u00a0it is\u00a0recognized\u00a0that\u00a0there is still room to\u00a0further enhance\u00a0economic cooperation, including boosting investments\u00a0between the\u00a0two countries.<\/p>\n
Both leaders also discussed issues concerning the protection of migrant workers of Indonesia and\u00a0the Philippines working abroad, cooperation in combating counter-terrorism and\u00a0making a more effective\u00a0partnership\u00a0in the area of disaster management\u00a0given the\u00a0two\u00a0countries\u0092 vulnerability against natural disasters. \u00a0The meeting was also an opportunity to continue promoting BIMP-EAGA for the benefit of both people’s namely in the Southern Philippines and Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
*Two Awards for Indonesia and All Indonesians<\/p>\n
On the final day of the WEFEA event,\u00a0President SBY was conferred\u00a0with the\u00a0Global Statesmanship\u00a0Award by the\u00a0WEF,\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0recognition\u00a0of\u00a0his efforts\u00a0and contributions\u00a0towards\u00a0economic development\u00a0in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
President SBY is now\u00a0the first Asian leader to receive this award.<\/p>\n
In the past, such award has been conferred toformer\u00a0Brazil President Lula\u00a0da\u00a0Silva (2010) and\u00a0former\u00a0Mexico President Felipe Calderon (2012).<\/p>\n
This award\u00a0is also given in recognition\u00a0of\u00a0SBY\u0092s leadership in elevating the country\u0092s\u00a0rank in the\u00a0Global Competitiveness Index\u00a0from 50 (2012) to 38 (2013).<\/p>\n
In his acceptance speech, SBY — who will end his term of office later this year —\u00a0paid tribute to the people of Indonesia whocontinue to\u00a0\u0093inspire and energize\u0094 him\u00a0in his service to the nation.\u00a0Below are excerpts of his speech.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u0093I am well aware that history will ultimately judge my Presidency well after I leave office in October this year\u0094, SBY said.<\/p>\n
\u0093But I do stand before you now with a sense of pride for what Indonesia has become today. In a turbulent world marked by political turbulence, economic uncertainty, strategic tensions, Indonesia does have a good story to tell, one that can perhaps inspire others\u0094, SBY said, highlighting the complex global environment he had to navigate during the start of his term.<\/p>\n
\u0093Indeed we have come to a very unique place in our history. Many pundits designate us as an emerging economy based on our achievements as a trillion dollar economy, and a member of the G-20.\u0094<\/p>\n
All of these achievements were earned\u00a0amidst the\u00a0period o fdomestic\u00a0democratic transition.<\/p>\n
\u0093We have achieved that critical point of no return in our democratic development. We have proved \u0096 to ourselves and to the world \u0096 that we do not have to choose between democracy and development, and that we can indeed have both\u00a0political freedom and high economic growth at the same time.\u0094<\/p>\n
Being able to maintain domestic stability allows Indonesia to play a more active regional and global role.\u00a0And with the\u00a0myriad of challenges in the global level, it is impossible to resolve that through conventional means.\u00a0Time and again,\u00a0Indonesia has shown a spirit of \u0093pioneerism\u0094 in its leadership, one that \u0093challenge old assumptions, constantly push boundaries, and break into new frontiers\u0094\u00a0in addressing global challenges.<\/p>\n
\u00a0This is the spirit by which Indonesia helped break the deadlock in UN climate negotiations with\u00a0the 26% – 41% formula in 2009.\u00a0The same spirit by which we finally resolve the 30-year conflict in Aceh.\u00a0The same reason we convened Global Inter-Media Dialogue during the height of the\u00a0cartoon crisis in 2006. And the same spirit Indonesia pushed for progressive norms at\u00a0the heart of the ASEAN Charter\u0094, President SBY said.<\/p>\n
Such leadership role, both\u00a0in the regional and global level, has gained numerous recognitions\u00a0for President SBY,\u00a0including\u00a0by the Government of the Philippines.<\/p>\n
Later in the evening, President Yudhoyono and Madam Ani Yudhoyono attended a special dinner at the\u00a0to the Philippines\u0092 Presidential Palace,\u00a0the\u00a0Malacanang, where Philippine high officials and members of the diplomatic corps.<\/p>\n
On this day the 23rd of May, President SBY received the Order of\u00a0Sikatuna\u00a0with the Rank of Raja\u00a0(Grand Collar)\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0Government of the Philippines, which\u00a0is the highest award that can be conferred by the Government of the Philippines to a foreign national.<\/p>\n
This award was given not only for\u00a0SBY\u0092s\u00a0outstanding effort in enhancing bilateral relations between Indonesia and the Philippines, but also for\u00a0his\u00a0active\u00a0contribution\u00a0in\u00a0ASEAN; promotion of inter-faith dialogue; as well as the promotion of peace, stability and human rights in the Asia Pacific region.<\/p>\n
The evening was followed by music and dances presented by Philippines youths, including Christian Bautista, Klarisse De Guzman and Fitri Cerado, who also sung President Yudhoyono’s composed song- Save Our World.<\/p>\n
