While in Korea, there were 64 consumer complaints for every 1 million Koreans,\u0094 President Jokowi added. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the President believes that consumer education is needed because Indonesians only understand about their rights as consumers but they could not fight for their rights yet.<\/p>\n<p>President Jokowi added that consumer education is also important for creating smart and wise consumers who are not suffer excessive consumerism, start to buy something which have long term benefits, save a lot, and invest in productive sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u0093Consumer was also disseminated to love domestic products, so the national industry can develop and can create more job opportunities,\u0094 the President stated.<\/p>\n<p>President Jokowi underlined that the Government must pay attention to consumer protection because it is concerning the presence of a state in protecting consumers effectively. The President added that the presence of a state is indicated by to what extent the norms and standards were achieved, and conformed by the producers, as well as to what extent that the law monitoring and enforcement is implemented effectively.<\/p>\n<p>However, the President said that the data showed that producer compliance to Indonesian National Standards (SNI)\u00a0is still low. Only 42 percent of goods in the market compliant with SNI. \u0093It means that something went wrong and needs to be fixed,\u0094 President Jokowi firmly said.<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, the President called on consumer protection agencies to work harder so that their presence can be felt by the people. Not to mention that only 22.2 percent of the consumer who knows the function of consumer protection agencies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Motor of the Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Jokowi, in his introductory remarks said that during the past five years, consumer consumption contributed to 55.94 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). That means, Indonesian national economy is still driven by consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the President asserted that consumer education and protection must become our common concern. \u0093It is something that we need to do because there were many cases where the consumers have been at disadvantage, or even have been endangered,\u0094 the President added.<\/p>\n<p>Also attending the limited meeting were Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Wiranto, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Darmin Nasution, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Puan Maharani, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Presidential Chief of Staff Teten Masduki, Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo, Minister of Health Nila F. Moeloek, Head of Financial Services Authority (OJK) Muliaman Hadad, Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education Mohamad Nasir, Minister of Communication and Informatics Rudiantara, Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H.
