Indonesian public has placed greater trust in the conventional media than social media, according to President Joko \u0093Jokowi\u0094 Widodo as quoting the 2018 trust barometer research. The data also recorded that in 2016, public trust in conventional media reached 59 percent as compared to 45 percent in the social media; 58 : 42 percent in 2017; and 63 : 40 percent in 2018.<\/p>\n

\u0093The public trust in media social has decreased from year to year,\u0094 President Jokowi said in his remarks at the Peak Commemoration of the 2019 National Press Day, at Grand City, Surabaya, East Java, on Saturday (9\/2).<\/p>\n

The Head of State also admitted that he is glad with the result considering that in this digital age, rapid development of social media and information technology could make anyone a journalist and chief editor. It could lead to an uproar, and spreading of pessimism and fear.<\/p>\n

He added that conventional media is needed in that situation to serve as communication of hope that filters information and spreads verified information.<\/p>\n

President Jokowi also said that the role of media has become more important lately to spread out the truth and reveal facts particularly amid the post-truth era.<\/p>\n

\u0093Conventional media is expected to be able to preserve and maintain its mission in finding truth and building optimism,\u0094 President Jokowi firmly said adding that the Government publishes national development achievements in order to inform the public, so they can benefit from these achievements, as well as to build optimism and spirit to work together.<\/p>\n

According to the President, the Government\u0092s continous efforts in establishing a well-informed society should not be taken as a form of political campaign or publicity stunt. He asserted that it is solely an effort to create a well-informed society.<\/p>\n

\u0093I hope the media can disseminate information about national development including all of its rooms for improvement,\u0094 he said.<\/p>\n

Therefore, President Jokowi invited the press to continue to affirm its identity as a source of accurate information for the community, to educate the public, to carry out social control, and to provide constructive criticisms.<\/p>\n

To conclude his remarks, the President, who was accompanied by First Lady Ibu <\/em>Iriana Joko Widodo, also sent out National Press Day greeting to all media person who attend the event and to those who are on duty.<\/p>\n

Also joining President Jokowi in the event were among others Minister of Communication and Informatics Rudiantara, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of State-owned Enterprises Rini Soemarno, Minister of Transportation Budi K. Sumadi, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, Minister for Women\u0092s Empowerment and Child Protection Yohana Yembise, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan, Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Zulkifli Hasan, Speaker of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) Oesman Sapta Odang, Commander of the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto, Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) Gen. Tito Karnavian, ambassadors of friendly countries, media players Surya Paloh and Chairul Tanjung, and Chairman of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Atal Depari. (AGG\/ES)<\/strong><\/p>\n
