President Joko \u0093Jokowi\u0094 Widodo has expressed condolences over the passing of Head of Data, Information and Public Relations Center of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.<\/p>\n

\u0093Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji\u0092un (Rest in Peace). Sutopo Purwo Nugroho has passed away in Guangzhou this morning,\u0094 President Jokowi wrote on his official Instagram account on Sunday (7\/7). <\/p>\n

Sutopo, who was listed on the Straits Times’ Asians of the Year 2018, passed away at the age of 49 in Guangzhou, China at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday after battling stage 4 lung cancer for the past two years.<\/p>\n

According to the President, despite his health the late Sutopo still showed dedication for the country and the people by sharing the latest information about disasters that hit a number of regions in Indonesia.<\/p>\n

\u0093Until the end of his life as Head of Data, Information and Public Relations Center of the BNPB, he managed to update the latest natural disasters (such as earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, or fires) that occurred in remote parts of the country so that the public did not panic and remained vigilant,\u0094 President Jokowi wrote.<\/p>\n

President Jokowi recalled what Sutopo once wrote: Life isn\u0092t about how long or short it is but how much we can help other people.<\/p>\n

\u0093And he walked the talk\u0094 the President said.<\/p>\n

Sutopo was born in Boyolali, Central Java, on Oct. 7, 1969. He gained nationwide respect for providing latest information on natural disasters on Twitter and Instagram even when he was at the hospital for treatment. Before his death, Sutopo had been actively updating the public with the latest information on disasters that hit the country through his Twitter account, @Sutopo_PN, which has more than 235,000 followers.
