As a disaster-prone country, Indonesia must anticipate disasters by raising the people awareness on disasters through intensive education at every level, President Joko \u0093Jokowi\u0094 Widodo has said.<\/p>\n

\u0093Our country lies in a Ring of Fire. We\u0092re also frequently hit by floods and landslides,\u0094 President Joko \u0091Jokowi\u0092 Widodo said on his remarks at the National Coordination Meeting of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the State Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday (23\/7).<\/p>\n

\u0093If there is a potential for a disaster, inform them as it is. It\u0092s not to make them worry, but as guidance to what we must do when disasters struck,\u0094 he added.<\/p>\n

The President cited an example of people in Japan where the people can remain calm when an earthquake disaster strikes and the warning sirens do not go off because they already know what to do since they have received disaster education.<\/p>\n

\u0093I have ordered the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the BMKG to develop those methods (the ones applied in Japan),\u0094 the President said.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, President Jokowi expressed belief that the disaster risks in Indonesia can be minimized if there are early warnings on disaster-prone areas. He also praised the BMKG on its efforts in disseminating disaster information.<\/p>\n

\u0093For example, when a tsunami happens, the BMKG disseminates the information on television with a clear explanation. This is what we need so the people are not worried,\u0094 the President said.<\/p>\n

Despite many innovations that have been developed by the BMKG, the President urged the agency to continuously renew and maintain its equipment and in order for the disaster detection equipment to remain safe, the President urged the BMKG to cooperate with security forces and local residents.<\/p>\n

\u0093Write \u0091very important\u0092 (on the equipment) so the people will know what it is so that it can be maintained together,\u0094 he added. (FID\/JAY\/ES)<\/strong><\/p>\n
