Investment from manufacturing industry in the first quarter this year showed a positive trend amid pressure due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
Manufacturing industry reported a total investment of Rp64 trillion, a spike by 44.7% compared to that of the same period last year at Rp44.2 trillion.<\/p>\n
\u201cInvestment from manufacturing industry has made a significant contribution, up to 30.4% of the total investment in the total sector of Rp210 billion,\u201d Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in Jakarta on Monday (27\/4).<\/p>\n
Agus noted that the investment from this industry derived from domestic investment (PMDN) reaching Rp19.8 trillion and from foreign investment (PMA) reaching Rp44.2 trillion.<\/p>\n
The amount, he said, reported a significant increase compared to the acquisition in the same period last year, namely PMDN amounting to Rp16.1 trillion and PMA amounting to Rp28.1 trillion.<\/p>\n
For the record, manufacturing sectors that contributed significant investment value in the first quarter this year include basic metal industry, metal goods, non-machinery and equipment amounting to Rp24.54 trillion, followed by food industry (Rp11.61 trillion), chemical and pharmaceutical industry (Rp9.83 trillion), non-metallic mineral industry (Rp4.34 trillion), and rubber and plastics industry (Rp3.03 trillion).<\/p>\n
Furthermore, investment from paper and printing industry amounted to Rp2.99 trillion, investment from motorized vehicle industry and other transportation equipment was reported at Rp2.14 trillion, and investment from machinery, electronics, medical instrument, electrical equipment, precision, optical and clock industries stood at Rp1.99 trillion.<\/p>\n
Ministry of Industry, according to Agus, is committed to encouraging manufacturing industry to drive the country\u2019s economy. However, amid the current condition the Ministry also urged industrial sectors to join hands to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by adhering to health protocols, he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose two sides must be in line,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Prior to the pandemic, the country\u2019s processing industry still showed positive trends as reflected in the achievements of Indonesia\u2019s Purchasing Managers\u2019 Index (PMI) \u2013 the gauge for manufacturing activities – released by a London-based global information provider IHS Markit in February this year at 51.9 or an all-time high since 2005.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are optimistic that through mitigation efforts or strategic policies during the ongoing pandemic, it is not impossible that Indonesia could become one of the biggest economies in the world before 2030,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The International Monetary Fund has previously projected that Indonesia\u2019s economic growth is expected to accelerate 8.2% by 2021. (Ministry of Industry PR\/SM\/EN)<\/p>\n
