President Joko \u201cJokowi\u201d Widodo invites the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) members to unite against COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

“Fifty nine years ago, the Non-Aligned Movement was established to fight against the “common enemy” of imperialism and neocolonialism. Right now our “common enemy” is COVID-19,” the President said during an online Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement on Monday (4\/5).<\/p>\n

The President added that the pandemic is far from over. He also called on the Non-Aligned Movement countries to carry out quick, careful and strategic measures.<\/p>\n

“We must strengthen our political solidarity, because only by working together we can win this war,” the President said.<\/p>\n

The President also said that the political solidarity should be translated into concrete cooperation. \u201cWe must fight to get fair and timely access to COVID-19 medicines and vaccines at affordable prices,” he said, adding that the patent regime and intellectual property rights related to drugs and vaccines should be applied more flexibly for the sake of humanity.<\/p>\n

The President also invited the NAM members to strengthen cooperation in the recovery of global supply chains for trade in health products and food.<\/p>\n

“(We must) strengthen global partnerships for developing countries. We need to voice and fight for commitments on development and humanitarian assistance, debt relief, and debt payment obligations from official creditors to be diverted to finance the handling of COVID-19,” the President said.<\/p>\n

The President added that the G-20’s commitment to suspend debt payments for low-income countries needs to be implemented.<\/p>\n

At the end of his remarks, the President reiterated that multilateralism must remain the foundation of international cooperation.<\/p>\n

“In the future, developing countries must fight to improve global health governance so that we are better prepared to handle the future pandemic,” the President said.<\/p>\n

The theme of the Non-Aligned Movement Summit is “United Against COVID-19” and was virtually attended by most of the NAM state leaders, and a number of international and regional organizations. The NAM Summit this year coincides with the momentum of the 65th<\/sup> Anniversary of the Dasasila<\/em> Bandung<\/em> (10 guiding principles) in 2020 and the 60th<\/sup> Anniversary of the establishment of the NAM in 2021.
