President Joko \u201cJokowi\u201d Widodo, Tuesday (19\/10), planted mangrove with several ambassadors of friendly countries and local communities in Bebatu village, Sesayap Hilir sub-district, Tana Tidung regency, North Kalimantan province.<\/p>\n

The Head of State received a warm welcome from local communities, environmental activists, and farming communities who have arrived in the planting site before him.<\/p>\n

Mangrove planting in Tana Tidung regency is a measure to rehabilitate mangrove forest.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will replant it so that this first [batch] will protect [the coast] from ocean waves, saltwater intrusion, and also protect the habitat of the species in mangrove forest and around mangrove forest,\u201d he said in his press statement after the planting.<\/p>\n

The President pointed out that there are 180,000 hectares of mangrove forest in North Kalimantan that will be rehabilitated by the Government, adding the Government targeted to rehabilitate up to 600,000 hectares of mangrove forest in the next three years.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur target in the next three years is to restore, rehabilitate as many as 600,000 hectares of the total area of our mangrove forest, which is the largest mangrove forest in the world at 3.6 million hectares,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n

Joining the President to plant mangrove in Tana Tidung were Ambassador of Czech Republic to Indonesia Jaroslav Dolecek and his wife, Ambassador of Chile to Indonesia Gustavo Nelso Ayares Ossandron, Ambassador of Finland to Indonesia Jari Sinkari, Ambassador of Switzerland to Indonesia Kurt Kunz, Vice Ambassador of Brazil to Indonesia Daniel Barra Ferreira, Country Director of World Bank Satu Kahkonen, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Governor of North Kalimantan Zainal Arifin Paliwang, and Regent of Tana Tidung Ibrahim Ali.
