President Joko \u201cJokowi\u201d Widodo and First Lady Ibu <\/i>Iriana Joko Widodo Wednesday (06\/01) visited historical place Serambi Soekarno (Soekarno\u2019s Veranda) located at the Convent of Saint Joseph in Ende regency, East Nusa Tenggara.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A<\/span>s written in the inscription <\/span>at the Veranda<\/span>, the young figure of the Indonesian independence fighter Soekarno<\/span>, calledBung<\/i> Karno,<\/span> during his exile in Ende <\/span>from<\/span> January 14, 1934<\/span> until <\/span>October 18, 1938, had <\/span>been spending his time to read<\/span>various books and magazines.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In addition<\/span>, <\/span>Bung<\/span><\/i> Karno also <\/span>discussed on <\/span>plans and schedules for <\/span>his drama as well as <\/span>exchanged ideas and talked intimately with monks, especially two missionaries from the Netherlands, <\/span>Father <\/span>Geradus Huijtink and Father Joannes Bouma. Both of them <\/span>were<\/span> known to have sympathy for <\/span>Bung<\/span><\/i> Karno’s idea<\/span>s and struggle<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to <\/span>Archbishop of the Archdiocese<\/span> of Ende Vincentius Sensi Potokota, Bung<\/i> Karno had close friendship with both missionaries as depicted in a painting at the location. Vincetius then said that in order to give respect to Bung <\/i>Karno as the founding father of Indonesia, the two missionaries called him \u201cMr. President.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

For the record, Serambi Soekarno<\/span> (Soekarno\u2019s Veranda) <\/span>was inaugurated on January 14, 2019, coinciding with the <\/span>commemoration of <\/span>85 years<\/span> of <\/span>Bung<\/span><\/i> Karno<\/span>\u2019s first visit to Ende when he was exiled by the Colonial Government.
