Presidential Special Staffer Diaz Hendropiyono Tuesday (10\/04) at The Dharmawangsa, Jakarta held a Focus Group Discussion on “B20 Side-Event Side-Event Ready to eMove: The President’s Target in Achieving 2 Million Electric Motorcycles in Indonesia”.<\/p>\n

“We’d like to hear inputs from stakeholders, including producers, consumers, and the Government regarding the challenges we can face together to achieve two million electric vehicles (EV) by 2025,” Diaz said in his remarks.<\/p>\n

The discussion was attended by a number of ambassadors from friendly countries who shared their knowledge about energy transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to battery-powered in their respective countries.<\/p>\n

“We are keen on learning from ambassadors who come from different countries, especially Norway. I spoke with the Ambassador earlier on this matter. She said 80 percent of the country’s people are now using EV. Thus, we can learn from Norway about how they can succeed in the EV transition,” he said.<\/p>\n

On that occasion, Diaz also revealed that the discussion would focus on electric motorcycles since Indonesia has many more motorcycles than cars, adding that the price of electric motorcycles can also be more competitive since the vehicles have more manufacturers.<\/p>\n

“There are already 35 electric motorcycle companies and only three car companies in Indonesia. The price will be more competitive for motorcycles. To meet the President’s target of 2 million motorcycles by 2025, we can encourage electric motorcycle users,” he said.<\/p>\n

In addition, Diaz also underscored the importance of transitioning to electric motorcycles because the automotive industry sector is currently one of the largest emitters in the country.<\/p>\n

“We cannot keep planting trees every time we drive a car, while our oil fuel supply can only last up to less than 10 years and maybe we have to import it,” he added.<\/p>\n

Regarding the transition, Diaz said that the President has issued several policies, including Presidential Regulation Number 55 of 2019 on Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motorcycle Program for Road Transportation and Presidential Instruction Number 7 of 2022 on Use of Battery-Based Electric Motorcycles as Operational Service Vehicles and\/or Individual Vehicles for Central Government and Regional Government Institutions.<\/p>\n

“The President’s directives were followed up quickly by his Cabinet Ministers, such as Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang who issued Ministerial Regulation on the Target for Achieving Electric Cars, Minister of Transportation who issued Ministerial Regulation on Technical Provisions for Electric Cars, and the National Police who issued Police Regulation on the Implementation of Electric Cars License Plate to be Free from Odd-Even Traffic Restriction,” Diaz said, adding that the results of discussion will be used as inputs for President Jokowi.
