In a bid to meet national demand for salt, the Government issued Regulation of the President of the Republic of Indonesian Number 126 of 2022 on Acceleration of National Salt Industry Development.<\/p>\n

The Regulation signed by President Joko \u201cJokowi\u201d Widodo on October 27, 2022, required the Central Government and regional governments to speed up building national salt industry to meet the national demand.<\/p>\n

In addition, the acceleration of national salt industry development also aims at developing salt with Geographical Indication (GI) certification.<\/p>\n

Based on the Regulation, the demand of national salt consisted of those for consumption, food industry, leather tannery industry, water treatment, livestock feed industry, fish salting industry, animal husbandry and plantations, soap and detergent industry, textile industry, oil drilling, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, and chemical or chlor-alkali industry.<\/p>\n

The Regulation stated that the national demand for salt must be met through domestic production by 2024, except for the need for salt for the chemical or chlor-alkali industry.<\/p>\n

This regulation mandates the salt economy center program (SEGAR) to accelerate the development of national salt industry. SEGAR is adopted in provinces that have the potential to develop salt businesses with the following criteria:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. land is available for salt production;<\/li>\n
  2. facilities are available for salt industry;<\/li>\n
  3. market for salt is available; and<\/li>\n
  4. supports are lent by the Central Government, regional governments, and\/or stakeholders.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The acceleration is made through a whole salt business system covering pre-production, production, post-production, processing, and marketing processes that are implemented in a quinquennial action plan for the acceleration of national salt industry.<\/p>\n

    \u201cFor the first time, an action plan to accelerate national salt development has been set for 2022-2024,” the Presidential Regulation reads.<\/p>\n

    Article 10 paragraph (1) of the Presidential Regulation stated that the success of implementing the action plan is measured based on the target of performance indicators consisting of production, quality, and absorption of salt production in SEGAR. The target for the performance indicators is set by the minister overseeing government affairs in the marine affairs and fisheries sector.
