President Joko \u201cJokowi\u201d Widodo Wednesday (01\/11) affirmed the Government’s commitment to ensure that gross violations of human rights in this country will never happen again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a clear mind and sincere heart, I, as Head of State of the Republic of Indonesia, acknowledge that gross violations of human rights did occur in various incidents,\u201d President Jokowi stated after receiving the Report of Team for Non-Judicial Resolution of Past Gross Human Rights Violations (PPHAM) at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.<\/p>\n

The President deeply regretted the 12 incidents of human rights violations that happened in the past, namely:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. 1965-1966 incident;<\/li>\n
  2. Mysterious Shooting incident, 1982-1985;<\/li>\n
  3. Talangsari incident, Lampung, 1989;<\/li>\n
  4. Rumoh Geudong and Sattis Post incidents, Aceh, 1989;<\/li>\n
  5. Enforced Disappearances of Persons, 1997-1998;<\/li>\n
  6. May 1998 riots;<\/li>\n
  7. Trisakti and Semanggi I and II incidents, 1998 and 1999;<\/li>\n
  8. Shaman Murders, 1998-1999;<\/li>\n
  9. KKA Intersection incident, Aceh, 1999;<\/li>\n
  10. Wasior incident, Papua, 2001-2002;<\/li>\n
  11. Wamena incident, Papua, 2003; and<\/li>\n
  12. Jambo Keupok incident, Aceh, 2003.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    President Jokowi expressed deep sympathy and empathy for the victims and their families.\u00a0 The Government and the President are also committed to try to restore the rights of the victims in a fair and wise manner without negating the judicial settlement.<\/p>\n

    President Jokowi has ordered Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs to oversee the Government\u2019s concrete efforts to restore the victims’ rights and to prevent the recurrence of gross violations of human rights in the future.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI hope these measures would be a meaningful step for healing the wound of the nation and strengthen our national harmony within the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,\u201d he concluded.
