President Prabowo Subianto Tuesday (01\/20) announced that he and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK) Keir Starmer had formally reached an agreement on a new strategic partnership between Indonesia and the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe view the UK as a partner that can play a significant role in our economy. They possess advanced technology, strong financial capacity, and a clear interest in investing in Indonesia,\u201d President Prabowo said in a press statement at Lancaster House, London, UK.<\/p>\n

According to the President, the partnership opens opportunities for Indonesia to benefit from the transfer of technology and the United Kingdom\u2019s financial capabilities. \u201cI believe this partnership will be highly beneficial for both sides,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In the area of strategic maritime cooperation, the Head of State said that the UK would support Indonesia\u2019s plan to build approximately 1,500 fishing vessels, as well as improve fishing villages, with the aim of enhancing fishermen\u2019s welfare while improving national protein consumption.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis partnership is very strategic for us, as it will accelerate our economic growth and advancement, especially in the maritime sector. I need to point out that three-quarters of our territory consists of seas and our people\u2019s protein consumption remains too low. We need to increase it,\u201d President Prabowo said.<\/p>\n

For the record, the new strategic partnership between Indonesia and the UK follows up on the Joint Statement on a New Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom, which was agreed upon by both leaders in 2024. The partnership reflects the strong commitment of both countries to deepening their established relations.<\/p>\n

Under the new strategic partnership, four main pillars focus on strengthening economic growth; cooperation in climate, energy, and nature sectors; reinforcement of defense and security; and the development of human capital and society.<\/p>\n

Through these pillars, Indonesia and the UK commit to building an inclusive, sustainable, and strategic partnership, while reinforcing their positions as key partners both in the region and globally.
