Should I? Why?

As you can all see, my cabinet is made up of extraordinary people, the most outstanding sons and daughters of Indonesia. I know that without them, I would not be standing before you today. Every human endeavor is ultimately a collaborative effort. The very essence of a cooperative is collaboration; it is gotong royong (mutual cooperation), the shared commitment to work together, and to always remaining cooperative.

Ladies and Gentlemen, but that is fine, because I always listen and obey the Indonesian people. Besides, there are only 38 names, so, I think it will be no trouble at all. I will read them out later.

Now, let us warmly welcome the representatives of the family of the Founding Father of Indonesian Cooperatives Muhammad Hatta Family: we have Bung Hatta’s grandchildren present here, Mohammad Athar and Rico Frantino. Thank you for your presence.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As people of faith, let us continuously offer our praise and deepest gratitude to the presence of Allah Subhanhu wa Ta’aala, the Almighty and Supreme Lord of all creation. To Him alone we devote our prayers, and from Him alone we seek guidance and assistance. We express our profound appreciation for the countless blessings, grace, and benevolence bestowed upon us and upon our nation. [We are grateful] for the peace we continue to enjoy amid a world still marked with wars, disputes, and conflicts, as well as for the gift of life and health that enables us to gather here today in Senayan area for the Peak Commemoration Ceremony of the 79th Cooperative Day, this year of 2026.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I extend my sincere congratulations on the 79th Cooperative Day to all members of cooperatives across Indonesia, wherever you may be.

Today is a deeply meaningful and joyful occasion for me. I am honored to stand before distinguished cooperative figures who have devoted their utmost dedication and perseverance to this cause over many years. I have had the privilege of working alongside you within several national associations of Village Unit cooperatives (KUD), most recently serving as Chairman of the Advisory Board. In addition, over the past three decades, I have also been entrusted with leading a number of cooperatives.

We have observed that Indonesia’s economic development has, for a considerable period, been influenced neoliberal economic doctrines, which, in substance, diverge from the principles enshrined in the 1945 Constitution. For many years, we have consistently striven to steer our economic trajectory back toward the path envisioned by our founding fathers, namely an economy grounded in the principle of kingship, centered on the people and structure to ensure broad participation and equal opportunity for all.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are not gathered here to dwell on past shortcomings. Rather, we acknowledge them as our shared responsibility, collectively, including the nation’s leadership. At that time, we may have been influenced by the perceived dominance of Western models, as though they represented a superior path capable of delivering rapid prosperity to our people. However, after more than three decades, experience has shown that such expectations have not been fully realized. From the outset, I have maintained the view that neoliberal capitalism would not necessarily succeed in our context, nor would it inherently deliver equitable and sustainable prosperity for the people of Indonesia.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Frankly, I feel like as though I am among family today. Members of the cooperative movement have always been like family to me. Despite my previous defeats in several presidential elections, I have consistently felt that the cooperative movement stood firmly by my side. Although we did not succeed at that time, we remained steadfast in our struggle for the Indonesian people. In the end, I was entrusted with a mandate by the people of Indonesia. I am committed to carrying out that mandate with the full measure of my strength and dedication; and to striving with all my ability to advance the greatest possible prosperity for the Indonesian people.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are fully aware that our nation is endowed with immense wealthy. In the early weeks following my inauguration, I came to appreciate just how vast Indonesia’s resources truly are. Yet, at the same time, I was deeply concerned. It was profoundly distressing to observe the extent to which our national wealth has been misappropriated, and how significant portions of it have been transferred abroad.

Therefore, I am determined to lead the government, together with my cabinet, to work hard and to act with bold, visionary ideas, not small or narrow ones. We are a great nation. The challenges, obstacles, and difficulties we face are also immense. We have only recently come to realize how many countries are envious of us. As a nation, we are kind-hearted, perhaps at times a little too trusting. That is part of our national character. When a guest comes to our home, even if we have little to offer, no coffee, no sugar, we still welcome them warmly. If necessary, we would even go to our neighbors to borrow sugar and coffee. That is our nature. We honor our guests and treat them with respect. However, there are also those who do not know their place. They come uninvited, claiming they wish to trade, yet over time they take advantage of us.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A cooperative is a tool for the weak and the poor. It is like a broomstick: when a single stick stands alone, it is easily broken; however, when many are bound together, they become strong. Therefore, there’s no need for concern. The Indonesian Cooperative Movement will rise to become a pillar of our national economy, an economic force that keeps our wealth within the country and prevent it from flowing abroad.

Allow me to observe the faces of our cooperative members here. These are not the faces of individuals who transfer or conceal funds abroad, correct? Nevertheless, that is not a concern. I have received reports indicating that many of our farmers now are able to take vacations overseas, and that is a positive development, vacations are allowed. After all, when would our farmers otherwise have such an opportunity? Today, this is becoming a reality, and we are committed to ensuring that our farmers, fishers, and workers achieve greater prosperity. Our economy will grow from the villages, sub-districts, and regencies, with financial resources circulating and remaining within these areas. We will restore what rightfully belongs to the people. If, in the past, the wealth of the Indonesian people has been diverted elsewhere, we will now return it, so that economic benefits flow down to the grassroots.

However, let me emphasize that we are not opposed to corporations. On the contrary, as a vast nation, Indonesia needs all elements of economic strength. We need cooperatives, we need MSMEs, we need the private sector, we need state-owned enterprises (SOEs), regional-owned enterprises (ROEs). All must grow into strong and complementary economic forces. That is what I mean by Indonesia Incorporated. Our founding fathers envisioned cooperatives as the sokoguru, one of primary pillars, of our economy. Strengthening cooperatives does not mean weakening other sectors. On the contrary, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are committed to strengthening them all.

Indonesia is rich, Indonesia will rise, and Indonesia will be capable of empowering every force within this Republic. For those who still have doubts, you are welcome to remain and witness our progress in the time ahead. And for those who feel pessimistic about Indonesia’s future, I sincerely invite you to explore opportunities elsewhere. No one will stand in your way. However, for those who choose to remain in Indonesia, let us unite. Let us uphold the spirit of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and work together. Let the strong support the weak and let the weak join in collective effort. Ladies and Gentlemen, Insha’Allah, we will rise together.

Let us return to the true character of the Indonesia nation: forgiving, understanding, compassionate, and committed to helping one another. Let us not be drawn into a culture of insults, envy, and suspicion. No success is ever achieved through conflict. Why, then, should we allow ourselves to be divided? [Please remember that] we are one [great] family, regardless of our backgrounds, ethnicities, or political affiliations. Every political party has its share of patriots, as well as those who fall short of that ideal.

Is a President allowed to say such a thing? Am I allowed, Sir? Am I? No, I am not addressing all of you. I am directing this to Minister of Primary and Secondary Education present here. Am I permitted to say it? If I am not mistaken, it is not considered inappropriate, is it?? A [wrongdoer] is still a [wrongdoer]. A national [wrongdoer]. What does that term even come from? It is [commonly used] in Betawi speech, is it not? After all, I was born in Jakarta. So, please forgive me if, in my enthusiasm, certain colloquial expressions slip into my remarks. My apologies. Is this a Cooperative Day commemoration, or have I begun a campaign? I am not entirely sure. No, of course not.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is true, as stated earlier, that we will undertake fundamental movements and efforts that address problems at their roots. Ladies and Gentlemen, when the body is unwell, we must first diagnose the illness before administering treatment. In the same way, we must clearly understand the core issues we face. I have consistently advocated this approach, because it is what I firmly believe in. I do not subscribe to neoliberal doctrines. They argue that we should think globally that border no longer matter. Such is the neoliberal mindset: if one is poor, it is considered their own responsibility. This is how they see it. This doctrine also suggests that wealth should be concentrated among the top one percent to, with the expectation that it will eventually trickle down to the rest of society – the so-called trickle-down effect. Let me ask you: do you truly believe it will trickle down? Do you believe it? I see members of the press present here.

I was born in a region with a strong Betawi character, but I am of Banyumas and Minahasa descent. Those are temperaments known for their fiery nature. However, I am now older, and I have become more patient. These days, I am patient—though at times, that patience can still wear thin. I seem to have forgotten that I retired from anger.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Western leaders themselves have now acknowledged that they have moved away from neoliberalism. It is they who have chosen to abandon it. The United States, the United Kingdom, and countries across Western Europe have all done so. Yet in our own country, I struggle to understand why certain intellectuals, perhaps exceedingly sophisticated, or perhaps operating with a logic that eludes me, responds differently. When we endeavor to build a system that strengthens our nation, we are met with ridicule, discredit, slander, and attacks. However, such actions have no effect whatsoever (euweuh pangaruhna). I repeat, euweuh pangaruhna (they have no effect)! Ladies and Gentlemen, we will continue to move forward. Ladies and Gentlemen, we shall not waver for we are on the right path, the path laid down by our founding fathers. It is the right path of safeguarding our people, upholding the dignity of the Indonesian nation, and honoring the service and sacrifice of every patriot. I will not hesitate. I remain committed to defending and strengthening the Indonesian nation and people. Ladies and Gentlemen, I ask for your patience.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have demonstrated this clearly. Within the first year of my administration, we have achieved food self-sufficiency. We no longer rely on imports; instead, we have begun to export. This accomplishment has been realized in the very first year of this administration. Just a few days ago, we launched B50, a diesel fuel comprised of 50 percent palm oil. Our oil palm farmers are right here in Indonesia, and the palm oil is produced domestically. At the beginning of this month, we will no longer import diesel from abroad. Furthermore, our researchers are developing palm oil-based gasoline, as well as ethanol derived from cassava, corn, and sorghum. Ladies and Gentlemen, I therefore hope that within the next three to four years, we will also be able to produce gasoline from agricultural crops. This will mean greater prosperity for cassava farmers, corn farmers, and farmers across Indonesia who will continue to contribute to the nation while improving the welfare of their families.

In the first year of our administration, we have also consolidated all state-owned enterprises (SOEs) into a sovereign wealth fund. More than one thousand SOEs have been brought together under this unified structure, with a total value of one trillion US Dollars. This places us among what maybe the fifth or sixth largest sovereign wealth funds in the world. Therefore, let us not be pessimistic or feel inferior. Humility is important, but a sense of inferiority is not. Furthermore, we are committed to reforming these SOEs. For too long, they have been associated with practices of corruption. You expect your President to speak candidly, do you not? I have warned repeatedly, and I will say it again: to those engaged in corruption, come to your senses. End these practices immediately. Our people are not naïve. So, stop. Return what belongs to the people. Return it all. We are a forgiving nation, but the people demand justice, and the people demand prosperity. Our children deserve quality education need good schools, teachers deserve proper salaries; doctors and nurses deserve fair compensation, our soldiers and police officers must be adequately paid so they do not burden the people, and our civil servants must receive sufficient remuneration, so they are not driven toward corruption. Believe me!

Let us unite across all sectors. Differences of opinion are not a problem. Affiliation with different political parties is not a problem. Every few years, we engage in constructive competition, and that is entirely appropriate. Whoever prevails should lead accordingly. However, those who do not succeed must not resort to destruction or disorder. down. What kind of nation condones such actions? Ladies and Gentlemen, leaders who incite destruction and disorder in this Republic, betray the very nation they are entrusted to serve. traitorous leaders.

I believe that, in time, justice will prevail. I have contested in five elections and lost four of them. Yet, never once did I instruct my supporters to engage in acts of destruction. We did not even organize demonstrations. I attended the inauguration of my opponent; I was present, I showed respect, and I offered my congratulations. Competition is both good and healthy. Is that not so? In any football match, only one team can emerge victorious. When a team loses, should it then turn against the referee? Competition is a normal part of public life; it should not be a source of division. Take Gus Imin, for example. At one point, he stood with me, and at another he did not. Yet this was never a problem, because at heart, he seeks what is the best for Indonesia. Today, he stands with me once again for the sake of the nation. There is no issue. As for others who may have defeated me in previous contest and are present here today, I would need to put on my glasses to see them clearly. Ladies and Gentlemen, to return to the main point: there is no issue.

We are one nation, one homeland, and one language. We are one family. Let us demonstrate that the Indonesia is a unique and united nation. One that competes yet ultimately comes together to work for the benefit of all its people. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the essence of Indonesian nation. Therefore, let us not dwell in cynicism. If there are those who disagree or choose not to participate, they may observe and assess our efforts. At the same time, we remain open to criticism. Criticism is valuable. It provides correction and keeps us vigilant. Accordingly, we welcome it.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Allow me to explain how the concept of the Red-and-White Cooperatives (KMP) came into being. In truth, this idea has been with me for a long time; indeed, for decades. During my military service, when I was assigned to villages and mountainous regions, we would remain for months within a single sub-district. It was there that I witnessed firsthand the hardships endured by the local population. I saw communities suffering from hunger; I witnessed people dying of starvation, and I was unable to intervene, as the provisions were limited to those allocated for my unit.

From that experience, I came to realize that we must safeguard and strengthen our capabilities at the grassroots village level. When Indonesia achieved sovereignty through the war of independence, our strength resided in the villages. At the same time, we aspire to become an industrial nation. To achieve this, I have long been convinced that the sole path to protecting the grassroots populace is through the power of cooperatives. However, when I began establishing cooperatives, I came to understand that without sufficient authority and institutional support, progress is exceedingly slow. This is especially true for those with little or no capital, for whom access to credit is extremely difficult.

When I assumed the presidency, together with the ministers, we accelerated efforts toward food self-sufficiency. We reduced fertilizer prices and increased the purchasing price of unhulled rice (gabah), ensuring that farmers’ incomes rose. Yet, I received reports stating, “President, their increase in their income is of little use. Why? Because their debts are substantial.” This is because farming operates on a 100-day harvest cycle. During the days outside those 100 days, a child might fall ill, school fees must be paid, or their goods might be damaged and require immediate repair. To meet these needs, they borrow money at extremely high, exorbitant interest rates. They borrow from loan sharks – those who impose interest rates that can reach up to 1 percent per day.. This is highly dangerous. They will remain trapped in debt for the rest of their lives.

For this reason, as one of the earliest policies of my administration, as you may recall, I authorized the write-off of debts owed by millions of farmers who were unable to repay them. Why was this necessary? Because many large businesses also fail to meet their debt obligations. Their debts amount to trillions, yet they remain unpaid. Instead, they rely on various financial mechanisms. What are they called? Haircuts, restructuring, and other such terms – options that are simply not available to ordinary people. Therefore, I concluded there was no alternative: our people must be given access to credit at low interest rates. The solution is to establish savings and loan cooperatives in every single village across the Republic of Indonesia.

That is how the figure of 81,000 emerged as our target, as there are 81,000 villages and sub-districts across Indonesia. The primary objective is to break the grip of loan sharks, so that millions of our people can be freed from such dependency. It also became evident that subsidized fertilizer could be distributed through these cooperatives. The same approach can be applied to the distribution of LPG cylinders.

Subsequently, we became increasingly aware that nearly all subsidized commodities can be channeled through cooperatives to prevent misappropriation. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is necessary because many subsidized goods are diverted and fail to reach those in need; instead, they are manipulated, and in many cases even smuggled abroad. This is the underlying rationale behind the establishment of the Red-and-White Cooperatives (KMP).

Subsequently, we began holding meetings, formulating plans, and mapping our strategies. Several options were considered. We could have proceeded using conventional methods. However, our people are suffering, and their circumstances are far from conventional. They require swift action. Ladies and Gentlemen, we cannot rely on business-as-usual approaches. We must think boldly, intelligently, and practically, not merely in theoretical terms. I am aware of the advice suggesting, “Mr. President, it would be best to begin with an academic paper.” Yet, such a paper can take up to eight months to complete, involving numerous meetings. Thereafter, it is often proposed that a pilot project be launched, which may take an additional two years, followed by limited trials in 100 villages. Meanwhile, we have 81,000 villages and sub-districts. Are our people expected to wait eight years? I refused such an approach. I am accountable to Indonesian people. Therefore, I chose a bold, decisive, and large-scale course of action, one that remains carefully calculated and within our means. Ladies and Gentlemen, that is what we are now implementing.

According to the earlier report from Minister of Cooperatives …. How many have we established so far? Approximately twelve thousand cooperatives? There’s no need to rush. If we are presently capable of establishing five thousand, then we shall inaugurate five thousand for now. Insha’Allah, the remainder will in due course A journey of one thousand kilometers begins with a single step. That is entirely acceptable. I have received reports indicating that more than one thousand cooperatives are already operational. In the near future, the number may increase to five or six thousand. Insha’Allah, we will achieve our goal and succeed.

If our target is one and a half years and we fall short, that is acceptable; we can make up the difference. However, if we set no target at all, we will never arrive. Ladies and Gentlemen, we must abandon the mindset that asks, “Is it possible?” It is possible, it must be possible, it will be possible, and it shall succeed, [everyone]! Victory or defeat resides within our minds and hearts. If we think, “We might lose, we may fail,” then we have already failed. But if we are convinced of victory, convinced of success, and convinced of our efforts serve the people, then we will achieve it.

Those are the key points I wished to convey. These figures may be statistical in nature, but they are highly promising, which is why I consider it important to present them. Our cooperative, the Red-and-White Village/Sub-district Cooperative (KDKMP), is designed as an institution whose membership encompasses all residents of each village, without exception. Moreover, the cooperative will not be limited to savings and loan activities. It will also provide outlets offering low-interest savings and microcredit, including super-micro credit. The latter refers to Mekaar Program. Ladies and Gentlemen, for the Mekaar super-micro credit, which previously carried an interest rate of 22 percent, I have reduced the rate to eight percent. My initial intention was to lower it further to five percent. However, the banking sector, including Mr. Rosan and his colleagues, advised that such a rate would be too low given operational costs and would leave only a minimal margin. Accordingly, I agreed. Compared to 22 percent, the rate of eight percent represents a significant improvement. That is what I am talking about! Keep it up!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Red-and-White Village/Sub-district Cooperative (KDKMP) will serve as an integrated village economic service center. It will include a cooperative office, a retail outlet, a credit unit, and a village pharmacy. We will establish pharmacies in villages to provide generic medicines at significantly lower prices than those available in urban areas. In addition, the cooperative will support village logistics through the provision of warehouses and cold storage facilities, ensuring that farmers’ produce does not spoil. It will also encompass a range of other economic services to support local communities.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have decided that all subsidized goods must be distributed to the public through the Red-and-White Cooperatives (KMP). This is mandatory. I state this unequivocally: it is mandatory. Subsidized goods intended for the people must not be traded commercially, so that they are received by those who genuinely need them.

We will also establish fishing villages and cooperatives. For the first time in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, our fishermen will be properly supported. They will be provided with cold storage facilities to preserve their catch, as well as ice-making plants so they can go to sea equipped with adequate ice supplies. Ladies and Gentlemen, we will also allocate large vessels to each fishing village, to be owned and operated by the fishing cooperatives themselves.

Moreover, these provisions are not granted as outright gifts. The beneficiaries will repay them in installments from the proceeds of their catch. In this way, all funds allocated to them will be fully repaid. Accordingly, the resources deployed in these fishing villages and communities through the cooperatives constitute loans that are to be repaid.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We project that the funds circulating through the Red-and-White Village/Sub-district Cooperative (KDKMP) can increase public welfare by 223 trillion Rupiah annually, with these funds circulating within villages rather than flowing outward. Consequently, the incomes of producers, including farmers, breeders, and fishermen, are expected to rise by as much as Rp202 trillion Rupiah. Ladies and Gentlemen, experts consistently observe that Indonesia’s logistics sector remains among the most inefficient and costly This is precisely what we intend to reform and streamline to achieve greater efficiency.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Once again, I wish you a Happy Cooperatives Day. I reiterate my call for unity across all sectors. These cooperatives will be established in every village throughout the country, regardless of political affiliation. Whether a village supported the Gerindra party or not, whether I secured victory in a particular regency or not, these considerations are entirely relevant. No one should concern themselves with such matters. I state clearly today that I am not the President of any political party or particular group. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am the President of all the people of Indonesia.

Happy 79th Anniversary Indonesian Cooperatives Day! Thriving Cooperatives, Advancing Indonesia!

Ah, yes, one additional note. Allow me for a moment. I will take a sip of this coffee. My apologies. In truth, I was unwell yesterday with the flu and a sore throat; it was difficult for me to be here today. However, I reflected on the situation. What if I did not come? The Red-and-White Cooperatives (KMP) and their members have already gathered. What concerned me most, however, was the thought that if I failed to attend, Mr.Margono and Mr. Mitro might come to me in the middle of the night to reprimand me. So, I resolved to push myself, had some coffee, gathered my strength, and made my way here today.

Lastly, this is a remarkable coincidence. You may ask Mr. Ferry whether he was the one who arranged this event. He selected the date and the day. Yet, when one looks closely at these numbers, they are quite striking. I did not plan this.

This is the 79th Cooperatives Day, correct? Seven plus nine equals sixteen. One plus six equals seven. And if we add up the digits for this year—2026—we get ten. Seven plus ten equals seventeen. One plus seven equals eight. So, today is indeed an auspicious day. I did not arrange it. Wherever I appear, the number eight seems to emerge. I do not fully understand it myself.
