President Prabowo Subianto has proposed a change in citizenship policy to open opportunities for dual citizenship limited to Indonesian talents who show extraordinary skills and major contributions to the nation\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n
The President delivered this proposal during the Presentation of the Government Statement on the Bill on the State Budget for the 2027 Fiscal Year and Its Financial Note before the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia of the 2026-2027 Session Year, held at the Nusantara building, Parliamentary complex, Jakarta, Friday (08\/14).<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, I convey to the House the recommendation of the Government of Indonesia to allow dual citizenship for certain talents whose expertise is needed by Indonesia,\u201d the President stated.<\/p>\n
In his address, the President also highlighted the great potential of the Indonesian diaspora across the globe with varied skills, required to expand Indonesia\u2019s development and competitiveness.<\/p>\n
He further explained that most of them were forced to choose another citizenship due to their career, family ties, and professional dedication overseas.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the Government proposed the policy to accommodate this need. Through the amendment proposed to the House of Representatives, the Government aimed to limit dual citizenship to extraordinary individuals who give significant contributions to national interests.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, the Government will propose to this honorable Assembly a law amendment to allow limited dual citizenship for Indonesian citizens who possess special talent and could make an extraordinary contribution to national interests,\u201d said the President.<\/p>\n
The President emphasized that the policy would be designed selectively and measurably. The Government would conduct an integrity assessment mechanism and set obligations to be fulfilled by the dual citizens.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis policy will be designed in a selective and measurable manner, along with integrity assessment, definite obligations, and full protection concerning the national interests and security,\u201d the President stressed.<\/p>\n
This proposal marked the Government\u2019s effort to maximizing diaspora potential as part of the human resources development strategy and national competitiveness improvement. Indonesian talents who have experience, skills, and global networks are expected to contribute to Indonesia without losing their ties to the nation.
