On 19th July 2014, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono delivered a press statement on the tragedy of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. \u00a0According to reports, 12 Indonesian were on board the ill fated plane. The majority which were from the Netherlands (up to 150 souls) were also mostly flying to Indonesia to visit Bali. In his statement President conveyed both in Indonesian and english as drafted below.<\/p>\n
On my personal behalf and on behalf of the people of Indonesia,\u00a0I would like to express\u00a0my deepest\u00a0condolences and\u00a0sympathies\u00a0for the\u00a0tragic incident relating toMalaysian\u00a0Airlines flight\u00a0MH-17\u00a0yesterday,\u00a017th<\/sup>\u00a0July 2014,\u00a0during its flight fromAmsterdam\u00a0to\u00a0Kuala\u00a0Lumpur.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to reports,\u00a0the\u00a0plane was shot\u00a0by a missile. No\u00a0less than\u00a0298 passengers including the crew lost their lives\u00a0in this tragic incident.\u00a0Indonesian\u00a0citizens are reported to be among the victims.\u00a0Our\u00a0prayers and hopes are\u00a0with\u00a0the families. Throughout the evening and early morning today,\u00a0I have been following\u00a0with great concerns\u00a0news\u00a0relating to the incident.\u00a0Since\u00a0the very\u00a0beginning,\u00a0the minister of Foreign Affairs\u00a0of\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0has reported the development to me and has tasked the relevant Indonesian\u00a0embassies,\u00a0namely,\u00a0the embassies in theNetherlands, Malaysia,\u00a0 Ukraine,\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 Russian\u00a0 Federation to gather as much information as possible including on the\u00a0possibility\u00a0of Indonesian citizens\u00a0on board the flight.\u00a0Thiseffort revealed that\u00a0Indonesian citizens were on board the aircraft.<\/p>\n However,\u00a0in accordance with the advice\u00a0of the airline concerned\u00a0and in order to fully ensure the\u00a0identity\u00a0of the passengers and to allow notifications to their next\u00a0of kin, the government of Indonesia\u00a0has been asked not to reveal their identities at this time. Further, there is a need for a thorough investigation on the cause of this tragedy. \u00a0The rest of\u00a0the\u00a0community should collectively address this incident,\u00a0notleast;\u00a0reports indicated\u00a0the plane was shot down by a missile related to the recent conflict situation in Ukraine. If this is proven, this would constitute a serious breach of international law and laws of war. Those responsible must be held fully accountable and be brought to justice. Indonesia calls for\u00a0a thorough investigation of the\u00a0incident and is ready to join any international\u00a0investigation on that matter.<\/p>\n Not least, this tragedy, the losses of\u00a0innocent lives reminds us of the urgent need for the conflict situation to be brought to an end, an immediate end. Indonesia calls on all the relevant parties to set aside their differences\u00a0and look for a\u00a0political settlement. I have also been informed by the\u00a0Foreign Minister of\u00a0Indonesia that later\u00a0on\u00a0this morning,\u00a0local time,\u00a0the United Nations Security Council will considerthis issue,\u00a0I welcome this\u00a0development. Also\u00a0in the wake\u00a0of the incident,\u00a0I\u00a0haveinstructed all Indonesian airlines to demonstrate upmost concerns\u00a0and avoid airspace\u00a0over conflict areas.\u00a0This should be coordinated with the government,\u00a0and as a member of the ASEAN family and in this holy month of Ramadan I wish to express my solidarity with the government and people of Malaysia and also with the countries whose citizens have fallen victims\u00a0to\u00a0this tragedy.<\/p>\n Before\u00a0I conclude,\u00a0Indonesia voices\u00a0once again its\u00a0greatest,\u00a0deepest,\u00a0and profoundconcerns\u00a0over the rapidly worsening situation in Gaza. Far from engaging in a ceasefire,\u00a0as expected by\u00a0the international community,\u00a0Israel has decided to launch a ground military operation.\u00a0[inaudible]\u00a0<\/em>the conflict\u00a0and once again,\u00a0I should say,and once again call for an immediate ceasefire to be answered by the\u00a0United Nations, the ending of the cycle of violence and the distribution of humanitarian assistance.\u00a0Israel\u0092s ground military operation can only add to the suffering of the Palestine, I should say,\u00a0to the Palestinian people and must be brought to an immediate end. These efforts revealed that Indonesian citizens\u00a0were\u00a0on board the aircraft. However, in accordance with the advice of the airline concerned, and in order to fully ensure the identity of the passengers, and to allow notifications to their next of kin, the Government of Indonesia has been asked not to reveal their identities at this time.<\/strong><\/p>\n 3.Further, there is a need for a thorough investigation on the cause of this tragedy. We deplore such escalation of the conflict and once again call for an immediate ceasefire to be observed by the United Nations; the ending of the cycle of violence; and \u00a0the distribution of humanitarian assistance.
