President Jokowi inaugurates Nusantara Student Dormitory (AMN) in Surabaya, Tuesday (11/29) (PR of Cabinet Secretariat/Oji)

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday (11/29) inaugurated the Nusantara Student Dormitory (AMN) which is located at Siwalankerto village, Wonocolo subdistrict in Surabaya city, East Java province.

“There are 410 students staying here, coming from Sabang to Merauke, from Miangas to Rote island (west to east and north to south Indonesia). All students from various regions gather here. Earlier, Chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) said that 40 percent of the total students living here come from Papua,” President Jokowi stated.

On that occasion the Head of State went on to say that the first proposal regarding the construction of the AMN was coined by 61 Papuan representatives who visited the State Palace in 2019.

During the meeting, those representatives told the President that there were latent conflicts among students.

“To that end, I agreed upon the proposal. We have agreed to establish the AMN in required provinces, cities/regencies,” President Jokowi said.

The President expressed his hope that the establishment of the AMN can be a place to build a relationship for cultural exchange as well as strengthen solidarity and brotherhood among students with various backgrounds.

“It is the importance of the AMN, so we can get to know each other, understand each other’s cultural customs, and get along well because students living at the AMN will also be provided with nationalism insights. Indeed, this is the objective of the establishment of the AMN,” President Jokowi asserted.

The President further said that Indonesia is the home for 714 tribes, while underscoring that the diversity of Indonesia must serve as a Nation’s strength, not a weakness.

For the record, the establishment of the AMN was regulated in Presidential Regulation Number 106 of 2021 on the Nusantara Student Dormitory (AMN). Based on the regulation, the AMN will be built in six cities/regencies in five provinces throughout Indonesia, namely Surabaya city (East Java province), Manado city (North Sulawesi province), Makassar city (South Sulawesi province), Bantul regency (Special Region of Yogyakarta province), Malang city (East Java province), and South Jakarta city (DKI Jakarta province).

In addition to the AMN in Surabaya, the dormitory was built by Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. The construction started from September 17, 2021, and was completed on May 31, 2022. The students living there are students from Veteran National Development University of East Java (UPN), Surabaya State University (UNESA), Airlangga University (UNAIR), and Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS).
