Press Statement of President of the Republic of Indonesia Regarding the Submission of Aspirations and Opinions and Discussion of the Regional Elections Law by the DPR at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta Special Region Province, August 27, 2024
Reporter:
Sir, do you have any response regarding the recent demonstrations? What is the current status of the detained students?
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo):
Yes, Indonesia is indeed a democratic country. It is good to submit aspirations and opinions in a democracy, and I truly appreciate and respect that.
I hope that the aspirations will be conveyed in an orderly and peaceful manner so that they do not harm or disrupt the activities of other citizens.
There were demonstrations yesterday. I hope the detained demonstrators can be released soon as well.
Reporter:
Has the Government responded to the Regional Election Law the House of Representatives discussed yesterday?
President of the Republic of Indonesia (Joko Widodo):
Yes, I appreciate the DPR’s quick response to the developing situation. A fast response is a good thing—perfect. And I hope it can also be applied to other urgent matters. For example, the Asset Confiscation Bill, which is important for eradicating corruption in our country, should also be resolved immediately by the DPR.
