Indonesian Muslim scholar Prof. Muhammad Quraish Shihab Tuesday (03/10) underscored the importance of peace as a fundamental message of the Qur’an.

“Allah commands us to establish peace. Peace begins within our souls. When inner peace is realized, it extends to our society and to the global community,” Quraish Shihab said in a sermon at the National Commemoration of Nuzulul Qur’an 1447 H/2026 A.D. held at the State Palace in Central Jakarta.

Quraish Shihab also emphasized that peace is a universal aspiration of humanity and a central message conveyed in the Qur’an.

“Peace is so important that the Qur’an teaches that when your enemy offers peace, you should accept it,” he added.

Furthermore, Quraish Shihab also stressed that efforts to realize peace must go hand in hand with the upholding of justice.

“We want peace, but we do not want to sacrifice justice. We want peace, but justice must also be upheld,” he said.

At the end of his sermon, Quraish Shihab conveyed prayers and hopes for President Prabowo Subianto, so he may always be granted strength in carrying out the mandate to deliver justice and prosperity to the people.

According to him, the prayer was inspired by the supplication of his teacher, Sheikh Mutawalli Asy-Sya’rawi, once recited for the President of Egypt on the essence of power that comes from God and the hope that a leader is endowed with the strength to bring justice and prosperity to his people.

On the occasion, President Prabowo Subianto expressed his appreciation for Quraish Shihab’s messages, particularly regarding the meaning of peace, justice, and the mandate of leadership.

“The more I realize that leadership is destiny, and that power originates from Almighty God. That power is bestowed as a mandate to defend truth, justice, and honesty. It is also a responsibility to protect and bring prosperity and justice to all those who we lead,” the President remarked.

The state-level commemoration of Nuzulul Qur’an served as a moment of spiritual reflection for all elements of the nation, reinforcing  the values of peace, justice, and unity, in line with the universal message of the Qur’an revealed as a mercy for all creation.
