Remarks of President of the Republic of Indonesia On the Commemoration of Vesak Day 2570 Buddhist Era

Greetings of Virtue,

My Fellow Countrymen,

Indonesian Buddhists, wherever you may be,

First and foremost, as faithful individuals, let us offer our praise and gratitude to the Almighty God, for all the blessing bestowed upon us, which have enabled us to commemorate Vesak Day in peace, good health, and filled with gratitude.

On this Vesak Day, I, Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Government, wish all Indonesian Buddhists and all Buddhists throughout the world a happy Vesak Day 2570 Buddhist Era.

Waisak Day is a sacred moment to commemorate the birth, the enlightenment, and the passing of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. The values encapsulated in the Waisak commemoration teach us about the importance of wisdom, compassion, self-control, and devotion to fellow human beings.

The Indonesian nation is a great nation because of its diversity. We have diverse ethnicities, religious, cultural, and traditional backgrounds, as well as different customs. However, we are united by a shared aspiration, namely to build Indonesia that is peaceful, just, prosperous, and well-off. The spirit of Vesak Day this year, with the theme “Dharma as the Source of Morality and Wisdom, Compassion as the Source of World Peace”, should become an inspiration for all of us to continue strengthening our brotherhood, spreading goodness, prioritizing dialogue, and maintaining harmony in the midst of community, national, and state life. In the midst of various global challenges filled with uncertainty, the Indonesian nation must remain steadfast in guarding unity and optimism. We must continue to work hard, help each other, and cooperate to realize prosperity for all Indonesian people.

I am confident and believe that the values of compassion, tolerance, and wisdom taught in Buddhist teachings will further strengthen the character of the Indonesian nation as a nation that upholds humanity and peace. Let us make this Vesak Day a momentum to strengthen national brotherhood, reinforce the spirit of devotion to the nation, and raise concern for fellow human beings.

To all Buddhists, I once again wish you a happy Vesak Day 2570 Buddhist Era. May the light of wisdom, peace, and compassion always illuminate our steps in building an advanced, modern, strong, and harmonious Indonesia.
