Gov’t Establishes New Directorate General of Islamic Boarding Schools

The Government has issued Presidential Regulation Number 18 of 2026 on Amendments to Presidential Regulation Number 152 of 2024 on Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Among other provisions, the amended regulation establishes the Directorate General of Islamic Boarding Schools.

The establishment of this new Directorate General aims to accommodate matters related to Islamic boarding schools. It is also a government measure to give greater attention to the existence and development of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia.

The statement was delivered by Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar after attending a limited meeting led by President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, in Jakarta, Wednesday (09/23).

“Alhamdulillah, the President has just issued a decree establishing a new directorate under Ministry of Religious Affairs specifically to accommodate Islamic boarding schools, namely the Director General of Islamic Boarding Schools,” Nasaruddin stated.

On that occasion, he explained that four days earlier he had inaugurated Director General of Islamic Boarding Schools as the official who would lead the new institution.

“So, this is a new institution within Ministry of Religious Affairs. Previously, Islamic boarding schools were managed under the Directorate General of Islamic Education, but they now have a separate directorate,” he added.

Furthermore, the Minister expressed his appreciation to the President for establishing the Directorate General of Islamic Boarding Schools, expressing hopes that it would strengthen the Government’s focus on these institutions.

“We thank the President for this extraordinary decision. In this way, Islamic boarding schools will receive special attention from the Government. Inshallah, we hope that in the future, these boarding schools will experience positive new developments compared to before,” Nasaruddin concluded. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (NST/MEP)
