Gov’t Ensures Normal Operations at Temporary National Data Center

The Government has announced that public services at the Temporary National Data Center (PDNS) 2, which was recently affected by a ransomware attack, will resume normal operations starting July.

“As directed by the President, operations in July will proceed normally with layered security backups implemented to prevent recurrence of the issues experienced this month,” Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto said, Monday (07/01) at the office of Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Jakarta.

According to the Minister, the Government’s services currently relying on PDNS 2 are in the process of restoration.

The backup data from PDNS 2 servers in Surabaya, he added, will soon be fully relocated to the National Data Center (PDN) in Batam.

“If the Temporary National Data Center experiences operational disruptions, there are backups available, specifically at the DRC or hotsite in Batam. This setup allows for automatic interactive service continuity. Additionally, each data center owner maintains their own backup, ensuring a robust backup system with at least three to four layers of redundancy,” he said.

The Minister also urged all ministries, institutions, and other government agencies to create backups of their data as a precaution against cyber-attacks similar to those experienced recently.

“Every tenant or ministry must ensure they have a backup in place—it’s now mandatory, not optional. This ensures that if there were operational disruptions at the National Data Center, backups would still be available,” he said.

Hadi also pointed out that the Government plans to organize the placement of data and reserves in layered arrangements based on the level of data classification, ranging from strategic and limited to open data.

“General data and statistical information will be stored in the cloud to prevent PDN from becoming overloaded with data,” he said, while underscoring that the State Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) will enhance cyber security by integrating the BSSN command control and activating the Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), which will maintain continuous monitoring of PDN management and data backup initiatives.

“We have also been ordered by the President to review presidential regulations and instructions on cyber operations, including those related to BSSN and its staff. This review aims to streamline command and control procedures for easier management in case of any issues,” the Minister remarked. (FID/UN) (RIF/EP)
