The commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence, held at the grounds of the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (8/17), was not only marked by the solemnity of the flag-raising ceremony but also enlivened by vibrant musical, dance, and vocal performances that revived the spirit of nationhood and love for the homeland.

The artistic performances had enlivened the Palace’s atmosphere even before the ceremony began, with an opening performance by Gita Bahana Nusantara (GBN) choir group, who presented a medley of traditional songs from across Indonesia. The atmosphere at the Merdeka Palace was further enlivened by a mass dance performance, representing various regions, specifically South Sulawesi and East Java.

The voices of Indonesia’s talented female singers also kept up the spirit of nationhood through the songs Zamrud Khatulistiwa (the Equatorial Emerald) by Angel Pieters, Negeriku (My Country) by Lea Simanjuntak, and Rayuan Pulau Kelapa (Solace on Coconut Island) by Dira Sugandi.

The Nusantara artistic performances were not only presented before the start of the ceremony but also continued after the flag-raising ceremony. GBN, together with students from Sekolah Rakyat (People’s Schools), performed the song Hari Merdeka (Independence Day), raising the spirit of nationalism.

The commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence also featured a special artistic presentation titled Indonesia Rumah Bersama (Indonesia: Our Shared Home). Hundreds of performers from diverse backgrounds and age groups took part in the show, reflecting the nation’s diversity.

According to the dance curator Eko Supriyanto, the artistic concept presented during this independence celebration conveyed a message of inclusivity, in line with the theme of the commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence, namely a sovereign, just, and prosperous nation.

“Above all, what is most important is that we present something that is more inclusive. Each year, we must become more inclusive and ensure broader representation,” Eko said.

The special performance brought together singing, dancing, and even pencak silat (Indonesia’s traditional martial arts). Eko said that the performances were designed to foster strong collaboration, both in terms of the artistic and cultural elements presented and the diverse group of performers involved, including students, singers, dancers, and even athletes.

“There was also a special performance in which we highlighted the collaboration between performers from various regions across Indonesia and the Indonesian Defense University (Unhan),” he said.

“This is a concrete expression of our belief that, in addition to sovereignty, justice, and prosperity, inclusivity also means involving our friends from Unhan, various artists, and even young children from junior and senior high schools and universities,” he said.

The performance concluded with the song Tanah Airku (My Homeland), sung by the entire performers that lifted the sense of national spirit. At the VIP podium, President Prabowo stood and joined in the singing of the song alongside the invited guests, participants, and the public in attendance.

The grounds of the Merdeka Palace were instantly filled with deep emotion and pride, concluding the series of artistic performances commemorating the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (JAS/TM)
