President Prabowo Subianto affirmed the Government’s commitment to improving the workers’ welfare by providing affordable housing. The President on Friday (05/01) conveyed this message in his remarks during the International Labor Day Celebration held at National Monument Complex, Jakarta.

He also explained that the Government has built hundreds of thousands of residences for people. In fact, the Government has planned a larger-scale development in the near future.

“We have built 350 thousand houses over the past year. We are expecting one million houses to be built this year, one million. These houses accommodate your need to be close to the industrial complex, close to your workplaces,” he said.

Moreover, the President highlighted the plan to build new cities specifically designed to support workers’ lives. Every city will be equipped with public facilities to support the people’s quality of life.

“Every city may have around 100 thousand houses, 100 thousand flats. It must have schools, sports facilities, daycares, hospitals, and the most important is public transportation, whether it is train, bus, to help their commute,” he added.

In addition, the President is aware of the high cost of workers’ expenses on housing. The Government, according to the President, is planning to provide affordable housing instalments over a long period.

“So, the cost for house rent, around 30%, will be used for house installment. The period can be 20 or 25 years. It can be extended to 35 or 40 years. This is because we believe that they will not run away, correct? Farmers and fishers will not run from paying,” he emphasized.

Regarding financing, the President will provide low-rate credit access through state-owned banks. “I urged Indonesian-owned banks, in the near future, to provide credit approval for the people. For the maximum of 5% per year,” he concluded. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (RD/MMB)
