President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to alleviating hunger and poverty on the first session of the G20 Summit in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Monday (11/18).

The session, which adopted the theme “Fight against Hunger and Poverty,” served as a crucial platform for world leaders to discuss collective strategies for overcoming the two pressing issues.

In his remarks, President Prabowo expressed appreciation to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for making poverty and hunger the focal points of this year’s G20 Summit.

“We have the fourth largest population. Therefore, hunger and poverty are, for us, a real issue, a day-to-day matter,” he said, adding that his administration puts overcoming these issues as the top national priority.

“I believe that education will bring us out of poverty. Education can bring better lives for our people. Free meals for our children are a vital part of our strategy. This is also part of empowering our young to be able to grasp the benefits of education,” he said while pointing out that his administration also allocates a high percentage of the State Budget for education.

President Prabowo also outlined Indonesia’s strategy for achieving food security, expressing confidence that his administration can overcome food shortages within three years.

“We will be self-sufficient in four years, and in five years, we are confident we can contribute to the Global Alliance Against Poverty and Hunger,” he said.

Furthermore, the President stressed that global economic issues cannot be separated from geopolitical dynamics while urging a ceasefire in Ukraine and Gaza and strengthened multilateral collaboration to address these global issues.

“We urgently urge an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and Gaza. Only by peace and stability can we overcome poverty and hunger,” he remarked. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/ABD) (DH/LW)
