President Prabowo Leads Meeting on Earthquake Response, Accelerated Recovery in Nagekeo, E. Nusa Tenggara
President Prabowo Subianto, on Wednesday (08/26), led a meeting on the earthquake response at the Earthquake Response Post at the 834th Territorial Development Infantry Battalion (Wakanga Mere), Nagekeo regency, East Nusa Tenggara province.
Relevant parties attended the meeting to discuss disaster response progress and measures to accelerate recovery in the affected areas.
“Today, Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at the East Nusa Tenggara Earthquake Response Post, located at the Territorial Development Infantry Battalion in Nagekeo regency, we are joined by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Minister of State Secretary, Minister of Home Affairs, Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), as well as the regional leadership coordination forum [members], including Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, the Chief of the East Nusa Tenggara Regional Police, and Regent of Nagekeo,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said.
Meanwhile, Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Suharyanto provided an update on the emergency response, explaining that the earthquake centered in Nagekeo affected seven regencies across Flores Island.
“The affected areas comprise seven regencies, Mr. President. Starting from West Manggarai—including Labuan Bajo—followed by Manggarai, East Manggarai, Nagekeo, Ngada, Ende, and Sikka,” he said.
The BNPB Head also reported that, to date, 105 people had died, 1,678 people had been injured, 179,037 people had been displaced, and 81,436 houses had been damaged. According to him, the high number of displaced residents was caused not only by the impact of the earthquake but also by concerns among residents about aftershocks.
“Previously, there were 142 aftershocks, and now there have been 143, Mr. President, that have been felt by the public since the 15th until today. Today, there was only one aftershock,” he explained.
The Government has ensured that logistical support, healthcare, energy, and basic services continue to be provided. The BNPB Head also reported that logistical assistance had been distributed through several channels, while the basic needs of residents during the emergency response period remained relatively secure.
“We’ve received a lot of assistance from ministries and government agencies, the TNI and Polri, the private sector, as well as other regional governments, which have also provided substantial support here. Therefore, there are no issues with the basic logistical needs required during the emergency response,” he added.
Through the meeting, the Government continues to map out the next steps in the disaster response, particularly to accelerate the recovery of the lives of communities in the seven affected regencies. The response is not limited to the emergency phase but also focuses on accelerating rehabilitation and reconstruction so that residents can safely return to their normal lives.
