In a bid to affirm Indonesia’s commitment to becoming a global player in the battery cell and EV ecosystem, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (07/03) inaugurated the country’s first electric vehicle battery factory of PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power, in Karawang regency, West Java province. With an investment value of Rp160 trillion, the inauguration of this factory marked a new milestone for Indonesia as a player in this ecosystem.

“Most importantly, we must truly become a global player in the electric vehicle supply chain. This is our initial step and this is the first and largest EV battery cell factory in Southeast Asia,” President Jokowi said.

According to the President, nothing can hinder Indonesia from competing in the EV ecosystem since the country already has the needed resources.

“We have mines of nickel, bauxite, copper, smelters, as well as (industries that produce) cathodes, precursors, and EV batteries. We also have an EV factory, all integrated into an ecosystem for electric cars,” he added.

The Head of State also expressed appreciation for the formation of a consortium between Hyundai and LG to build the grand package for the electric battery ecosystem, thus indicating that relations between South Korea and Indonesia are getting stronger. (KS/DNS) (GWH/MMB)
