President Jokowi wears Kustim traditional attire inspired by the Kutai Kartanegara Ing Martadipura Sultanate, at the 79th Independence Day ceremony.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Saturday (08/17) donned Kustim traditional attire inspired by the Kutai Kartanegara Ing Martadipura Sultanate for the 79th Independence Day Proclamation Ceremony at the State Palace in the new capital of Nusantara, East Kalimantan province.

According to the President, the traditional clothes have historical significance in the Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate located in East Kalimantan province.

This sultanate is one of the oldest kingdoms in Indonesia and is regarded as a precursor to the Nusantara.

The term ‘Kustim’ derives from ‘Kustin,’ meaning ‘greatness,’ signifying that this attire represents the highest caste in the royal hierarchy.

During the Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate, Kustim traditional clothing was exclusively worn by the Aji Sultan, the princes, the Aji Sultan’s elder sister, and the princes’ wives. This attire was typically reserved for important ceremonies, including Erau, a grand celebration hosted by the sultanate.

The President’s choice to wear Kustim traditional clothing at this year’s Independence Day ceremony highlighted both his appreciation for Indonesia’s cultural heritage and the continuation of values of greatness and nationalism passed down from our predecessors.

On that occasion, First Lady Ibu Iriana Joko Widodo also wore matching national attire, further emphasizing the national significance of the celebration.

By wearing Kustim traditional clothing, President Jokowi conveyed a significant message about the importance of preserving Nusantara traditions and culture.

The President reminded the people of the glory and greatness of Indonesia’s historical kingdoms. This choice of attire serves as a fitting symbol during the Independence Day commemoration, highlighting not only the ceremony but also the celebration of our nation’s rich cultural heritage and history.
