27th ASEAN Summit, President Jokowi: ASEAN Should Contribute to the World Problem Solving

President Joko Widodo said that in recent days the world was shocked by the sad news of the violence in several countries. Therefore, the President of Joko Widodo asked to do a better cooperation in the field of implementation of the ASEAN Convention on Counter Terrorism.

“ASEAN needs to boost intelligence cooperation and cooperation in strengthening the rule of law,” President Jokowi said when interventions on Plenary Meeting of the 27th ASEAN Summit in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Saturday (21/11).

In addition to the issue of terrorism, President Jokowi also highlight the handling of migration and the South China Sea. Related to the South China Sea, President Jokowi stressed that peace and security in the South China Sea should be created and international law must be respected

Regarding the forest fires that had just occurred in Indonesia, President Jokowi explained, all efforts have been made by the Government of Indonesia. Forest fire fighting by land and air has deployed more than 30,000 personnel; weather modification and 325 tons of salt already stocked with 4 aircrafts; water bombing and 120 million liters of water were sprayed using 23 helicopters; some countries are also helping Indonesia, including Singapore and Malaysia; and a firm legal process has been done.

President Jokowi explained that he has compiled important steps for the future, namely the preparation of One Map Policy; establishes a moratorium on permits use of peat lands; conducting a review of licensing; as well as restoration of peat land ecosystems.

“President Jokowi also reminded that 2015 is an important year for ASEAN, the ASEAN Community will be the entry into force”. We will become one community, togetherness and cooperation should be encouraged to be highlighted,” the President said.

At the same time, we are now towards the ASEAN Community by 2025. Therefore, ASEAN should be able to maintain unity and centrality, where the dynamics of our region will be higher. “Without unity and centrality of ASEAN, the region will become a struggle for influence of the great power, and ASEAN should be able to bring peace and stability of the region,” President Jokowi said.

“ASEAN should be able to contribute to solve the world problem, and ASEAN must be part of a problem solver,” President Jokowi said. (TKP/ES)/Sy.
