5,200 Traditional Markets to be Available This Year
The Government has built and revitalized 4,200 markets in the last four years and is about to build 1,000 more this year, President Joko Jokowi Widodo has said.
“There will be 5,200 traditional markets built by the end of this year,” The President said during the inauguration and the Awarding Ceremony of Indonesias Traditional Market Award and the Opening of the Ministry of Trades Working Meeting, in Hall 3a ICE BSD, Tangerang, Tuesday (12/3).
President Jokowi added that in the last four years, the Government has committed to improving physical conditions and management of traditional markets to increase their capacity to compete with online market.
The President also said that he has instructed Ministry of Trade to push for an online ecosystem and improve the offline ecosystem to provide platform for the traditional markets in the digital era. He has also instructed regents and mayors to allocate funds in regional budget (APBD) for packaging machinery in order to improve the packaging of products from craftsmen, fishermen and farmers.
“Packaging is of particular importance for penetrating online marketplace,” President Jokowi explained.
Product branding and labelling, President Jokowi added, are pivotal for traditional markets products to compete in offline and online market and, in turn, their turnover will increase as well.
“If we have succeeded in (penetrating) the national market, we can enter the global marketplace. Thus, we need to figure out the networks and to prepare for them,” the President concluded. (DND/JAY/ES)
