6.3 Magnitude Quake in Situbondo Kills Three People

Rumah-Rusak-Gempa-Sumenep-300x171A 6.3-magnitude quake hit East Java and Bali regions on Thursday (11/10) at 01:57 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. However, the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake epicenter is located at the coordinate of 7.47 LS and 114.43 BT at a depth of 12 kilometers or 55 kilometers northeast of Situbondo City, East Java.

“The worst affected area is in Gayam District, Sumenep Regency, East Java,” Head of the Information Data Center and Public Relations of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in his press release today (11/10). The quake killed three people and several houses were damaged.

Identities of the three people are:

1) Nuril Kamiliya (M/7) Prambanan Village, Gayam District, Sumenep Regency;

2) H. Nadhar (F/55) Jambusok Hamlet, Prambanan Village, Gayam District, Sumenep Regency; and

3) Male Adult (still in identification process), Prambanan Village, Gayam District, Sumenep Regency.

“The victims died from being hit by debris from collapsed houses,” Sutopo said, adding that the quake hit while the victims were sleeping so they could not escape when their houses collapsed.

The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of East Java Province and BPBD of Sumenep Regency are still collecting data of the affected areas. Based on the report, houses in the following locations are damaged: Jambuir Village, Gayam Regency, Sapudi Islands, Sumenep; Kopedi Village, Bluto Regency, Sumenep; Kertasada Village, Kalianget Regency, Sumenep; East Gendang Village Mosque, Sepudi Regency, Sumenep, and East Nyabakan Village, Batang-Batang Regency, Sumenep.

The earthquake vibrations, according to Sutopo, was felt throughout East Java region including Situbondo, Jember, Banyuwangi, Lumajang, Probolinggo, Bondowoso, Sumenep, Pamekasan, Sampang, Bangkalan, Pasuruan, Batu, Malang, Blitar, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Jombang, and Mojokerto.

“A strong shock was felt by the residents in Sumenep and Situbondo for 2 to 5 seconds and they poured out of their houses, whereas in other areas, a moderate shock was felt for 2 to 5 seconds,” Sutopo said.

Based on the earthquake map analysis, the intensity was between III and IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in Denpasar, III MMI in Karangkates, III MMI in Gianyar, III MMI in West Lombok, III MMI in Mataram, III MMI in Pandaan. “In general, the quake did not cause a lot of damage,” Sutopo said.
