Indonesia First in World in People Having Highest Trust in Government: Report

Indonesia is ranked first in terms of Trust and Confidence in National Government, according to  the data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in its Government at a Glance 2017 publication released on 13 July 2017.

“Indonesia is first on the list of countries that have the highest Trust and Confidence in the National Government based on the data from the Gallup World Poll (used by the OECD),” said Indonesian Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati after reporting the report to President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo in Jakarta, Tuesday (18/4).

Sri Mulyani added that the report summarizes various indicators of the government sector’s achievement from countries who are members of the OECD, along with other countries including Indonesia. One of the chapters in the report, she added, discusses achievements of the government’s working programs used as the indicator of people’s trust to the Government.

“The OECD used the result of a survey conducted by an US-based international survey institution named Gallup World Poll (GWP),” the Minister said as quoted by Head of Press, Media, and Information Bureau of the Presidential Secretariat Bey Machmudin in his press release on Tuesday (18/7).

“The people’s trust to the their governments is influenced by whether the people consider that the Government can be relied on or not, whether the government is responsive or not, whether the government is fair or not, as well as whether the Government can protect the people from risks and how they can give public services effectively,” Sri Mulyani said.

For the record, the Indonesia tops the list, ahead of developed countries who join the OECD (the United States 30 percent, the United Kingdom 31 percent, Germany 55 percent, France 28 percent) or developing countries non OECD (India 73 percent, Brazil 26 percent, South Africa 48 percent).

“Six countries with the highest rank in the list are Indonesia, Swiss, India, Luxemburg, Norway and Canada,” Sri Mulyani said, adding that the Indonesian people’ trust to the Government in 2016 was 80 percent, compared to that in 2007 which was only 28 percent.

“The people’s trust to the Government serves to boost the government’s effectiveness and economic development, as well as the measure of the results of the Government’s policies,” Sri Mulyani said, adding that it shows that the Government has worked well and the people appreciate it by putting trust to their Government.

“Trust to the Government is highly related to the people’s supports to their leaders. When the government is considered to have a higher moral integrity, more people will trust their governments,” the Minister added.

For the record, the data is taken from Gallup World Poll (GWP), which is a survey used to measure people’s trust to their governments. The survey is the only survey yang collects data on people’s trust to governments in OECD countries and other major countries. (ES) (EP/YM/Naster)
