Religious Minister Calls for Mutual Understanding & Respect
Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin respects the use of certain fashion model such as Islamic full-face veil or niqab in public spaces because the motivation to wear it may be vary, not only as fashion or lifestyle statement but also as a reflection of their religious belief.
Lukman invited the public to respect women wearing niqab, as well as others who wear other type of clothes.
It is their right to exercise the understanding of religion that they believe in, the Minister told the press after attending National Gathering event (Silaturahmi Kebangsaan), at Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta, on Wednesday (16/5).
Especially for women wearing niqab, Lukman reminded that they must also realize that they live in a pluralistic society. He suggested them to act in a way that makes the people feel safe around them.
Lukman expressed his hope that they would understand if there are regulations in a number of educational institutions or in certain places banning the usage of full-face veil.
This matter must be understood by those who wear the veil. In some social environments we are demanded to interact directly, openly without the veil, the Minister concluded hoping that both parties must be able to build awareness for mutual respect. (DNA/JAY/ES) (GWH/MMB/Naster)
