Asian Games: Indonesia Wins Gold in Tennis Mixed Doubles

Aldila Sutjiadi-Christopher Rungkat grab gold medal in tennis mixed doubles

Indonesian mixed doubles pair Aldila Sutjiadi and Christoper Rungkat successfully won a gold medal in the Asian Games mixed doubles tennis competition, after outclassing the Thailand’s mixed double pair of Luksika Kumkhum and Sonchat Ratiwatana of Thailand.

The Indonesian pair claimed victory 6-4, 5-7, (10-7) in the final round held at Jakabaring Sport City tennis field, Palembang, Saturday (25/8).

For the record, the last time Indonesia won a gold medal in mixed-doubles was from Yayuk Basuki and Suharyadi at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games.

Some of high-ranking officials including Minister of Youth and Sports Imam Nachrowi, Governor of South Sumatra Alex Noerdin, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono and Head of the National Development Planning Agency Bambang Brodjonegoro were spotted among the spectators at the final match.

In a post-game interview, Christopher told reporters that the victory gave him a boost to seek glory at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. “We are targeting the Olympics,” he said.

Previously, Indonesia also secured a silver medal through Muhammad Sejahtera Dwi Putra who won the Shooting 10 meter race on Running Target Mixed Men, I Gusti Bagus Saputra from the BMX Bicycle sports on Men’s Competition; Indonesia Women’s TBR Team from Rowing on Traditional Boat Race 200 meter Women.

The bronze medal was presented by Ahmad Sigi Saresta Yudha from the Karate on Men’s Kata; and Wiji Lestari from the BMX Bicycle sports on Women ‘s Competition. (*/ICE) (STU/EP/Naster)
