Gov’t to Redistribute 3 Million Hectares of Land

Following the success of distributing 1,9 million hectares of deserted land year, the Government has set the target of redistributing 3 million hectares of land to the people through social forestry activities.

“We have decided to set the target at 3 million hectares. This is a huge number,” President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said in his remarks at the opening of the National Consultation of Agrarian Reform and Social Forestry for social justice and 2018 Global Land Forum at State Palace, Jakarta, Thursday (9/20).

President Jokowi added that the Government this year aims to redistribute 7 million certification of land, after it distributed 5 million certification of land in the previous years. Next year, the President added, the Government aims to redistribute 9 million certification of land.

“We have to work hard to meet the target that we are aiming. We’ve met the 5 million targets and God willing, we can also meet the 7 million target this year,” the President added.

President Jokowi went on to say that as a nation, Indonesia is graced by God with large lands, owning lands in 17.000 islands. Nevertheless, President Jokowi acknowledged that in the distribution process, redistribution, complaints have often been voiced by the public, the civil society, as well as non-Governmental organizations, saying that land redistribution has not been fair yet.

Therefore, President Jokowi added, the Government is trying to straighten out the problem so that the agrarian reforms, distribution of land certification, and social forestry can be well implemented and done in a fair manner.
