BMKG Warns Public on Sunda Strait Tsunami Zones

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of tsunami zone in the area of Mount Anak Krakatau.

“The tsunami zone still applies within a 500-meter radius of the low-elevation coastal zone (five meter above sea level),” Deputy Head of the BMKG for Geophysics Dr. Ir. Muhamad Sadly, M. Eng said during a press release on Saturday (5/1).

Sadly calls on the public to remain calm and vigilant in doing activities on coastal area of the Sunda Strait. In addition, he asked the public to monitor information related to tsunami awareness through websites, mobile applications and social media of the BMKG and to monitor Mount Anak Krakatau volcanic activities through the application Magma Indonesia provided by the Geology Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Recourses (ESDM). He also asked the public not to believe misleading information and rumors.

“BMKG and the Geological Agency, with support of the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) and Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, continuously monitor and share information on the updated situation,” Sadly said.

For the record, Gunung Anak Krakatau volcanic activity has triggered a tsunami in the Sunda Strait, killing hundreds of the people in Pandeglang and South Lampung and displacing thousands of them. (EN/BMKG/ES)
