Dry Season Predicted to Start in April: BMKG

Deputy of Climatology Affairs of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Herizal on Wednesday (6/3) in Jakarta said that the transition of rainy season to dry season in Indonesia would be largely influenced by the East Monsoons wind power.
This is due to the absence of climate anomalies in the Indian Ocean and the weak El-Nino that enter Indonesia, he said.
The transition of the season will begin from Nusa Tenggara region in March 2019, Bali and Java regions in April 2019, parts of Kalimantan and Sulawesi in May 2019 and to the whole Indonesian territory in June to August 2019.
The BMKG predicts that dry season is expected to arrive early in parts of NTT, NTB, East Java, Central Java, Central and South West Java, parts of Lampung, Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra and Riau and East and South Kalimantan.
He added that East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Bali, southern and northern Java, parts of Sumatra, South Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and Merauke will also experience drier droughts than normal in the season.
The peak of the dry season in 2019 is predicted to occur in August-September.
In the meantime, Deputy of Meteorology Affairs of the BMKG Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo urged the people to be aware of the increasing potential of forest fires in the east coast region of Sumatra, especially in Riau and surrounding areas during the transition season in March.
Based on the analysis of the Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) on 5 March 2019, forest fires potentials remain quite high in the eastern part of North Sumatra, Riau Islands, East Jambi, Bangka Belitung Islands, North Kalimantan, North Sulawesi and North Maluku.
Furthermore, all institutions, regional government, and the community are also urged to be vigilant and to brace for the possibility of the impact of the dry season, especially in areas prone to meteorological drought, forest fires, and availability of clean water. (Humas BMKG/EN)
