Ministry to Set Up Task Force to Ensure Train Operation During Extreme Weather

Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi has instructed state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and commuter line operator PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia to establish a task force to anticipate weather-related hazards which often disrupts Greater Jakarta commuter train operation.

According to the Minister, the measure needs to be taken in response to extreme weather conditions including heavy rain and thunder which have hit several areas in Greater Jakarta lately, shuting down signal and electricity line and disrupting the operation of trains. These conditions, he added, directly affect commuters who are forced to use other modes of transportation.

“In short term, I ask PT KAI to establish a task force to analyze the incident and address the issue,” Budi said.

The Minister acknowledged that railways facilities in Greater Jakarta area are quite old, contributing to the commuter train operational problems. In addition, extreme weather including heavy rain and thunder has worsened the situation, he added.

Therefore, the Minister maintained that the task force will solve issues related to train facilities, including rail tracks and focus on certain points which are indicated as the source of the problem. Regarding the old railways facilities, Budi said his Ministry would coordinate with PT KAI in planning investment to rejuvenate the facilities including rail tracks and overhead contact system (OCS). The rejuvenation, Budi added, is divided into two terms, short and medium terms. For short term, it can be completed in 2 weeks or a month, but the medium term which will last for 6 months to 1 year requires further deliberation on budget and investment.

Budi also expressed hope that the task force can anticipate extreme weather and take necessary measures to avoid train delays so the passengers will not be affected. (Ministry of Transportation/EN)
