Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo expressed concern about the large number of 2019 election officials who died from exhaustion while carrying out election-related works.

To date, there are around 86 election officials who died after securing simultaneous elections held on Wednesday (17/4).

“We are waiting for proposals from the Elections Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) and the General Elections Commission (KPU) regarding the budget and the information on the number of Local Poll Administrators (KPPS) and police officers who are under medical treatment or deceased. I am sure that the Government will give rewards to those officers,” the Minister told reporters after a Limited Cabinet Meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Monday (22/4).

Tjahjo also said that the Government would evaluate the 2019 Simultaneous Election after the General Election Commission (KPU) announces the election results.

“After the KPU’s official announcement, the new Government will discuss the matter with the new House of Representatives (DPR) members.” he said, adding that it is important to build a democratic electoral system that is more effective and efficient.

Tjahjo also said that he has received resignation letter from the Regent of Mandailing Natal (Madina) Dahlan Hasan Nasution due to the defeat of presidential candidate he supported in his region. He also said that the letter was ‘misdirected’.

“If a regent wants to resign from his position, bureaucratically, first of all, the letter should be submitted to the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), then the result should be submitted to the Governor, and the Governor should submit the letter to Minister of Home Affairs.” Tjahjo added.

The Minister further said that he has coordinated with North Sumatra Regional Government on the resignation of the regent and he will summon the regent.

“He is a successful regent and the reason for his resignation is political issues. If we approve the resignation, it will become a precedent,” Tjahjo said. (FID / JAY / ES)
