BMKG Predicts Heavy Rains in Most Indonesian Areas
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to stay alert to the possibility of heavy rains until early May 2019 due to MJO (Madden Julian Oscillation) activity in eastern Indonesia.
“This causes several cyclonic circulations in the waters of Sulawesi Sea, northern part of East Java Sea and the Arafura Sea, and the presence of wind and wind turnaround in Indonesia,” said Deputy of Meteorology of the BMKG Drs. R. Mulyono R. Prabowo, M.Sc, in a press release in Jakarta, Tuesday (30/4).
According to the BMKG, this condition may increase the potential growth of rain clouds, especially in the eastern part of Indonesia from end of April to early May 2019.
Mulyono mentioned areas with the potential for heavy rain in the period of 30 April – 6 May 2019 include: East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, North Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.
Meanwhile the regions with the potential for strong winds in the same period include: West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.
For oceans that have a high potential of 2.5 to 4.0 meters waves are estimated to occur in the West Indian Ocean of Aceh, the North Pacific Ocean of Manokwari until Biak, North Ocean in Manokwari, and northern waters of Biak.
“The BMKG calls on the public to remain vigilant about the potential for hydro meteorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides, and strong winds, especially for areas that will be affected high intensity rain in the next few days,” Mulyono said.
