Gov’t to Revamp Bali’s Sukawati Market

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Friday (14/6) announced that Sukawati Market, the most distinguished and long-standing art market in Bali, is currently being revamped and a tender will be opened this month so that the revamp can be completed immediately.

The President made the statement visiting Sukawati Traditional Market and Sukawati Temporary Art Market, in Gianyar Regency during his working visit to the province.

“The revamp costs Rp89 billion taken from the State Budget and Rp3.9 billion from the Bali Regional Budget,” President Jokowi said.

The Head of State expressed hope that the revamp can be completed next year and the market can be transformed into a clean and organized market. Thus, the revamped Sukawati Market that will accommodate 1,700 vendors can bring convenience to visitors, he added.

“The market must be transformed from traditional into modern one which has good management, arrangement, and adequate place for parking lot. The parking lot will be located in the basement and it is a good thing since it was very difficult to find a parking space,” the President said.

President Jokowi went on to say that the Government’s target to revitalize traditional markets across the archipelago will be the same as that of five years ago and it has met the target to revitalize 5,000 traditional markets.

“The Government has also developed more than 8,900 village markets,” the President added.

“Markets should be a place where products from our farmers, fishermen, and craftsmen are sold. All markets in Indonesia must be rejuvenated,” President Jokowi said.  (AIT/AGG/ES)
