President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed his condolences over the passing of Tunisia’s first freely elected President Beji Caid Essebsi on Thursday (25/7).

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Indonesia, I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi on 25 July 2019,” President Jokowi wrote on his twitter account @jokowi on Thursday (25/7).

The President also wrote that the late President Essebsi will be forever remembered for bringing democracy and revolutions in his country.

For the record, President Essebsi died at age 92 due to ‘severe health crisis’, Tunisian officials said. He was a prominent figure in Tunisia after former Tunisian President Zine el-Abedine Ben Ali was ousted in 2011 after 23 years in office. He won Tunisia’s first democratic presidential election in 2014, following Arab uprisings across the region.

President Essebsi was a former lawyer who studied in Paris, French and during his career he once served as Minister of Home Affairs and Speaker of the Parliament. (ES)
