Gov’t to Develop Productive Migrant Village

In a bid to empower, to protect, and to improve assistance for Indonesian migrant worker candidates, Ministry of Manpower together with relevant ministries/institutions initiated a development program called Productive Migrant Village.

“The Productive Migrant Village program aims to create a productive community in the place of origin of the migrant workers,” Secretary General of Ministry of Manpower Ir. Khairul Anwar said at a thematic forum of the Governmental Public Relations Coordination Board (Bakohumas) in Solo, Central Java, Wednesday (7/8).

According to Khairul, this forum aims at: a) providing information for migrant worker candidates particularly on workers’ protection and placement; b) empowering migrant workers as well as their family members; c) encouraging an active role of village administrators and all stakeholders in migrant workers’ place of origin; d) reducing the growing number of non-procedural workers.

“Ministry of Manpower will support and facilitate the program for 400 villages in the next three years,” Khairul said, adding that in 2016 the pilot project had been launched in two locations, namely in Kenanga Village, Indramayu, West Java province and Kuripan Village, Wonosobo, Central Java province.

He went on to say that the number of productive migrant villages has raised from 120 villages in 2017, to 130 villages in 2018 and 150 villages this year.

“We cooperate with all stakeholders to run this program, including ministries/institutions, provincial governments, local governments, village administrators, private parties, universities, village communities, and financial institutions,” he added.

Khairul once again emphasized that the establishment of the productive migrant village is a form of the Government’s integrated support to improve protection of the Indonesian migrant workers as well as their families. (Hen/ES)
