Gov’t Might Restore Internet Access in Papua, West Papua: Wiranto

The Government is considering to restore internet access in the provinces of Papua and West Papua after several days of internet blackout in the two provinces, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto has said.

For the record, the Government restricted internet access in the wake of riots in those regions as a measure to control circulation of provocative messages, hoaxes, and hate speeches that may trigger more chaos.

“We are grateful that the situation in Papua and West Papua have improved and the people can do their daily activities and back to business,” Wiranto said during Papua Yospan Event in Jakarta, Sunday (1/9).

He also thanked residents in Papua and West Papua provinces who remain calm and stay committed to maintain peace in the regions.

“We are grateful for the initiative of Mr. Freddy Numberi and friends, as well as Chief of Regional Police and Chief of Regional Defense Forces to maintain security and order in Papua and West Papua. We will circulate the message to all people throughout Indonesia that we are all brothers after all,” said Wiranto, while expressing hope that the spirit will continue to live on and reunite us as a nation.
