BPS: 1.35 Million Foreign Tourists Visit Indonesia in October 2019

The number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia in October 2019 reached 1.35 million, 4.86% higher compared to that of October 2018 with 1.29 million visits, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The BPS data also shows the number of foreign tourist visits in October 2019 is 3.28% lower compared to that of September 2019.

Head of the BPS Dr. Suhariyanto said that the number of foreign tourist visits from January to October 2019 has reached 13.62 million, 2.85% higher compared to the same period in 2018 with 13.25 million.

“The number of foreign tourist visits in October 2019 consisted of 856,350 tourists who use air transportation, 336,040 tourists who use sea transportation, and 162,010 tourists who use land transportation,” Suhariyanto said during a press conference at the BPS Office, Jakarta, Monday (2/12).

Suhariyanto added that the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia via air transportation in October 2019 increased by 0.13% compared to the number of foreign tourists visits in October last year.

“The increase in foreign tourist visits occurred at least at ten air entrances with the highest percentage increase recorded at Lombok International Airport, West Nusa Tenggara which reached 62.48%, followed by Kualanamu Airport, North Sumatra with 37.42%, and Minangkabau Airport, West Sumatra with 30.11% increase, while the lowest percentage of increase occurred at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport, Pekanbaru, Riau with 0.87% increase.

The lower number of foreign tourist visits occurred at five air entrances with the highest percentage decrease occurred at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten with 22.70%, and the lowest percentage decrease occurred at Husein Sastranegara Airport, Bandung, West Java with 2.97%.

Suhariyanto went on to say that the highest increase of foreign tourist visits in October 2019 come from the ASEAN region, with 20.14% increase. The lower number of visits occurred in foreign tourists coming from the Asian region other than ASEAN, which amounted to 14.10%.

He further said that the highest number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia came from Malaysia with 241,100 visits (17.80%), China with 160,400 visits (11.85%), Singapore with 145,200 visits (10.72%), Australia with 131,900 visits (9.74%), and Timor Leste with 92,000 visits (6.79 %).

The BPS Head added that the highest increase of foreign tourist visits from January to October 2019 come from the ASEAN region, with 17.78% increase. The lower number of visits occurred in foreign tourists coming from the Asian region other than ASEAN, which amounted to 10.28%.

“Based on the country of origin, foreign tourist visits to Indonesia during 2019 mostly came from Malaysia with 2.58 million visits (18.94%), China with 1.77 million visits (13.01%), Singapore with 1.55 million visits (11.38%), Australia with 1.15 million visits (8.42%), and Timor Leste with 1.02 million visits (7.48%),” Suhariyanto said.
