The newly-inaugurated Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) Underpass is projected to contribute to the increase of tourists visiting Yogyakarta, Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple, and the surrounding areas, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“We only have to operate intermodal transportation services so that the people and tourists have various options of transportation modes,” President Jokowi said when inaugurating Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) Underpass in Kulon Progo, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Friday (31/1).

The President went on to say that the operation of New Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo may bring an influx of tourists to that area since there will be an increase of flights to Kulon Progo.

“It (the flight) can be increased twofold or threefold because the new airport has huge capacity so there are several long flights that are bound directly for Yogyakarta which cannot be operated in the old airport due to the lack of airport slot,” the President added.

Also joining President Jokowi in the inauguration were, among others, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Transportation Budi KaryaSumadi, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Wishnutama, Governor of Yogyakarta Sultan Hamengkubouwono X.
