President Jokowi Calls for Improved EoDB Ranking

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has ordered his Cabinet to improve the country’s Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) ranking and to make it into Top 40.
For the record, Indonesia’s ranking in the World Bank’s EoDB index has remained stagnant at 73rd although improvements are made compared to that of 2014 ranking at 120.
Therefore, in a bid to improve the country’s EoDB ranking, the President put emphasis a number of things.
“Do focus on improving indicators that are still ranked above 100 and also indicators that actually rise in rank,” the President said during a limited meeting on the Accelerated Improvement of EoDB Ranking, at the Presidential Office in Jakarta, Wednesday (12/2).
According to the President, four indicators which are ranked above 100, among others, starting a business is still ranked 140, dealing with construction permits is ranked 110, registering property fell to 106, and trading across borders remains stagnant at 116th.
“The two indicators are already ranked below 100 but actually fell again, for instance, getting credit from 44th to 48th and resolving insolvency from 36th to 38th,” the President said.
The President has also called on Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) to devise a dashboard monitoring system and to periodically evaluate it so various problematic indicators can be improved.
“Main issues that need improving are related to procedures and period that must be simplified. We must cut red tape and shorten processing time,” the President said.
The President also cited an example of time needed to start a business in Indonesia, where it takes 13 days with 11 procedures.
“If we compare it to China, for example, it takes only 9 days with 4 procedures, so we must be better than China,” the President said, adding that the ease of doing business is not only aimed to medium and big enterprises but also to micro and small enterprises.
The ease of doing business, the President added, may be in the form of permit simplification and even no need of business permit and only a regular registration is needed. (TGH/EN)
