New Yogyakarta Airport Designed to Withstand Earthquakes and Tsunami: President Jokowi

The newly-built Yogyakarta International Airport can withstand earthquakes up to 8.8 Richter Scale, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“Head of the BMKG told me that it can also withstand tsunami waves up to 12 meters,” the President said during the inauguration of the Yogyakarta International Airport, the operation of the Airnav Indonesia Tower, and the Tsunami Early Warning System in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta Province, Friday (28/8).

The President said that the total cost for the Airport construction is Rp11.3 trillion, including Rp4.2 trillion for land acquisition, and Rp7.1 trillion for the construction of terminals and runways.

President Jokowi also praised the Governor of Yogyakarta for the architecture and design of the Yogyakarta International Airport.

“I think this is the best airport in Indonesia for now. I want to thank PP and Angkasa Pura 1 for this” the President said, referring to two State-Owned Enterprises.

The President further said that the airport had less traffic due to pandemic and expressed optimism that the airport will be very busy after the vaccine is invented.

“This morning, by saying bismillahirrahmanirrahim, I inaugurate the Yogyakarta International Airport and the operation of the Airnav Tower and the Tsunami Early Warning System,” the President said.

Also present during the event were, among others, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, Governor of Yogyakarta Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, and Governor of Central Java Ganjar Pranowo. (HIM/EN)
